If you like to have time to explore a museum. Make this at least half of your day! They have so much to see and do. The rates are a little pricey for a museum, but once you walk in and see how it is all maintained and how long some of the items have been on display it is worth it! I do not recommend making this trip with very small children as there is a lot of things they can get into and it is a very busy place. You have to meet Sue at least once in your life!

The Field Museum is a must see if you are in Chicago and have children. The skeleton of a T. Rex in the main hall will delight any young child who dreams of the days of dinosaurs. They have a good exhibit for ancient Egypt and their Hall of Evolution is impressive.

We began our four hour visit by going through the Viking exhibit. Even though we have seen several Viking exhibit around the world, this is the best by far. We then went to the Pawnee lodge where the staff member told us about the lodge; however, he also told us about the different exhibits in the museum. We then went to the gem and jade exhibits. The gem exhibit was exquisite. The gems were shown in their natural state, then as a polished stone and then in a setting. We viewed the Ice Age movie which was very interesting and educational. We ate or had a snack at the food service on the main floor as well as in the Discovery Cafe and both were very good. We look forward to returning to Chicago to view more of the great exhibits.

It is a nice museum, but honestly it is more for kids. Natural History Museum in NYC is better. It might also be that I lived in London for several year and museums there are free. I haven't been in a museum since that can even hold a card to the British Museum.

Sue greets you right away and how can you not be in awe of a dinosaur? With a focus on biology, this museum appealed to my kids who loved seeing the animal displays. My favorite aspect was the Egyptian exhibit, which had an incredibly smart design and let you see as both ancient Egyptians and more modern archaeologists (King Tut era). The close proximity to other museums make this a great outing for the day, with keeping transportation costs a little lower. There is a cafe when you first come in, but we chose to eat a little closer to the hotel. As I wrote in other posts, I'd definitely see this on the Chicago Go card, which will get you a reduced price on admission to the major attractions in Chicago. The one warning is to see which attractions will be closed (season). The main ones we couldn't go to (that we would have loved to see were Navy Pier, River Architectural Tour, Trolley Hop On/Off).

We spent the better part of a day at the Field and that wasn't enough time to see everything. I recommend reviewing the exhibits online first and plotting out what you want to see to make the best use of your time. The cafe on the main level offered a nice choice of food and the prices were reasonable.

We had originally planned on about half a day at the Field Museum.....wrong! I had purchased special event tickets and thought I had planned plenty of time between displays. The Vikings and Vodou exhibits were well displayed and beautiful to view. The tv show, Vikings, has been a favorite of ours, so that was a must....most impressed with jewelry and ornamental pieces with explanation s...The other,Vodou, was quite a surprise. I was in Haiti 2 weeks ago and never saw the elaborate, well preserved pieces that the Field Museum had on display....just wonderful. Well worth the extra time we were in there. Because it has been decades since I was there, it was great to wander around and take it all in. I plan on not waiting 50 before I visit again!

It's been a few years since I've been to the Field Museum, and once again I was impressed by the facilities, breadth and quality of materials presented. There attractions, both permanent and changing, are worth going to Chicago for in itself.Saw a couple of the permanent displays, and they were definitely permanent. Nothing had changed. It was the special attractions that drew me this time, on voodoo, as well as the Vikings. What I was really interested to see what is in the main Fourier, along with the pachyderms and dinosaur was a high school choir singing. That's really cool, and different.I would highly suggest you bring some water, food and snacks, as the cafeteria is quite expensive. Although there is a nice gift shop, again, quite expensive.I'll go back when I'm in Chicago again, and look forward to the changing displays.
