There is a roadside sign erected of the cliff side of the highway to mark the trail. The sign is kind of tucked back in the curve of the road, and more visible to southbound traffic than north. We only walked up the trail 30 yards and there was a baby seal playing in the fresh water stream.

This attraction is only a short walk (5 mins at most) from the main road and you are rewarded with a beautiful waterfall and pool at the end. The seals are on the rocks by the car park opposite but if you want to see absolutely loads of seals, walk up the road about 100 metres to an unmarked 'pull in' and you will see scores of them sunning themselves, clambering on the rocks and taking the occasional dip.

Stopped here on our way to Blenheim and it was amazing to see so many seals on the rocks....so beautiful and the falls walk was good too.

The walk was easy, we had 2 kids walk it with ease. They swam in the waterfall although very very cold they loved it. We din't see any seals as it was the wrong time of year.

What was good about this attraction was that because it natural you are dependent on the seasons. We were unlucky and didn't see the pups at the waterfall. But if you drive South for half a kilometre and look out at the sea viewpoint we saw at least a hundred seals and were able to witness the juveniles playing, so we'll worth it.

We visited in February and did not expect to see any seal pups as they don't visit until April. However having seen the pool and waterfall featured on a TV programme, it was great to be able to see the route the adult and baby seals have to take to reach this little freshwater pool. The pool and waterfall are only a 10 minute walk off the main highway and are well worth the visit to see a pretty and tranquil spot.

This is a must and take your time. There were no pups at the waterfall but if you go on the beach side you will not be disappointed. You can walk on the beach and get pretty close to the seals (just make sure to respect the 10 meter distance). There were seal pups with sunning themselves along with adult seals. We sat down and just watched them move around. It was so much fun to see them in their environment. I was able to get some great pictures of them.

The waterfall is easy to walk to and really pretty. I would say, go without the expectations of seeing the seals as I was a bit disappointed. ( My own fault)

Dropped by on the way north and expected to see the seals at the waterfall however was not aware they only go there in April onwards.Beautiful waterfall and fun seeing the seals in the Coast.

Nice pleasant walk. I think it would've been better to go earlier in the summer as no seal pups this time of year (February) and there's a drought so the waterfall & stream weren't as spectacular as they could've been.

Lovely walk to the waterfall and a really nice spot, but alas no pups when we were there - no quite the right time of year. We stopped at the nearby seal colony and lookout and saw plenty of seals playing, swimming and laying about there. Worth a visit even if no pups in residence.

I went in Summer ... no seal pups (and I didn't expect any). Nevertheless, it's a walk worth your while. It's only short, and the track is well formed. There's the attraction of the rail bridge and tunnel, lovely forest, and a pretty waterfall.

We set out from Christchurch with a 3 hour journey to see the sea pups here. It was definitely worth the journey! The drive includes beautiful scenery, a brilliant first impression of New Zealand to us (but it also has a lot of bends and police cars hidden around corners for speeding). There's a short walk to the waterfall, which is a beautiful sight. But the best place to view the sea pups is on the opposite side of the road, by the sea. On the day that we went there were researchers on this part of the rocks, and so you couldn't get very close, although you could see a few fur seals lazing around. Instead, back track to the Lookout and hopefully you'll have as much luck as we did - the seals were right there! Just below us on the rocks - spectacular!FYI - if you're Googling directions, you want to search for: Ohau Stream Walkway and Waterfall, State Highway 1, Half Moon Bay 7371, New Zealand

This is an excellent little walk of about 10mins through bush to a little pond with frolicking pups. Super cute and really close. Also see them in the surf on the otherwise of the road.
