Dear TrevorThank you for your feedback. Old Dubbo Gaol is currently undergoing an upgrade to its displays. We recently completed the historical restoration and re-opening of the Watchtower, and are currently working on the heritage restoration of the Infirmary. We have completed restoring the fabric and paintwork, and before Easter we will have installed a new exhibition on the prisoners who were treated in the Infirmary. During this time we are attempting to keep the impact to our current displays as minimal as possible. At this time we are also creating a digital catalogue of our artefacts using a Collection Documentation Grant awarded to the Gaol from Museums and Galleries NSW. As this catalogue is being created some artefacts are out of their usual places, creating more empty space. This is a temporary necessity to create a major resource for the community. We appreciate your feedback and apologise. We will be working hard over the next month to complete this stage of work and hope to restore the full atmosphere this Heritage Site has to offer.
I really recommend a visit to Old Dubbo Gaol if you are out that way. I thoroughly enjoyed the guided tour, and of course wandering around afterward taking in all the stories of the place. Gaols have most certainly come a long way since those days, as have our laws. Imagine today if using foul language was prisonable, i think the majority of the population would be locked up! Anyway, although this gaol is small, it is a great piece of early Australian history and most definitely worth a look.
Went there today spent a couple of hours there, chlidren liked it and found it very interesting and a little spooky at times .very lovely lady at the reception who answered all of our questions cool gifts too. Definitely worth a visit.
We had a couple of hours to kill so decided to visit the Gaol. It was more interesting than we expected, lots to read as you walk through the different areas of the gaol. We had a pleasant morning here. We took ourselves around the gaol as there weren't any tours at the time we arrived. The staff at at the entrance/gift shop were very nice.
A great way to understand what happened in Dubbo over a hundred years ago and really interesting displays. It's a great way to show friends and family visitors how things were in the old days, how punishment was delivered and what extents the law went through to bring law breakers to justice. It also shows the hardship and the way people lived, and the types of punishment they went through after being caught.
Took my little sister & my mum. We loved it! Lots of information, fun inclusions! They have an activity booklet for the kids (that my mother & I enjoyed more) & the prisoner/officer show was great & quite funny!
We visited the gaol with our 2 boys aged 8 and 9. They had the best time. They loved the gaol escape attempt. It is a must see when in Dubbo.
Excellent, great insight to olden days, a great way to spend a couple of hours, I can honestly say it's worth a visit and even the kids there were having great fun
Easy to find in the centre of Dubbo although parking can be a little bit of challenge at times. One (1) hour limit to most parking close by and if visiting the Gaol around an hour would be plenty. We timed our visit for the 11am escape Tour and added a little bit more excitement to just reading the signage.
Went to Old Dubbo Gaol, was fantastic, even the kids enjoyed it, really interesting and worth a couple of hours to have a nice stroll around
Right in the middle of the city, good access for wheelchair, a bit roungh at the entry (wooden cobblestones uneven) unable to get into the ticket/gift shop, ramp provided to get into main cell block.
We spent an hour at the gaol and it was very informative and entertaining. The guy who did the tour was knowledgeable on the history and added a great deal of humour. The day we visited it was 37 degrees and no wind - even 1 hour was enough to know I wouldn't want to be there longer.
To get the downside out of the way first; it's a bit hard to find. Having said that however, the rest of the review is all good. Enthusiasm abounds among the staff and volunteers and the gaol itself, while small, is full of information and history. You can chose to either explore the gaol yourself or enjoy the antics of the 'convicts and police.'
First attraction on our 2 week road-trip. Worth the visit and a stark reminder of what life was like for the early settlers. Don't think Elizabeth Fry ever visited the place !
Interesting to learn about the history of the jail. Displays were excellent with lots of information about those people that served time there.
