Horn Island is the home of an extensive museum devotes to World War 2 memorabilia. Privately set up. A small entry fee to discover more about the island that is second only to Darwin for being on the receiving end of Japanese bombs. Boat trip is interesting in its own right and the jetty while small provides safe anchorage. On trip across look for wild life on reef.

I was quite surprised, nothing really interesting around here...It's just a little village probably alive only for checking ships and prepare clearances for yachts crossing the Torres strait...

If your into your fishing then this place is a great spot. The amount of different fish you can catch here is unbelievable. Black jewfish, All sorts of different trevallys 5 kilo plus, Big queenfish, spanish mackerel to broad barred mackerel, barracuda and more. I even managed a coral trout and mangrove jack off the wharf there using the live herring thats sitting under the wharf in their thousands. Just watch the sharks as a big live bait wont last more than 10 minutes in this kind of water. If youve had enough of fishing go to the local pub { pretty sure the only one } and have an ice cold beer. The locals are really friendly and there are quite alot of the people are working there rather than traveling which makes for some interesting conversation and mixes it up a bit. Just dont camp at the back of the pub ! BEWARE ! there are crocs arounds but thats not the worry, the worry is the mosquitoes and sandflys camping around there. Be prepared to have every inch on the surface of your skin to be bumpy and irritated.

Flew From Cairns to Horn Island, as part of a 10 Day Fly/Drive with Frontier Safari / Australian Wild Escapes.. Its a short drive from the small airport to Horn Island Jetty, as you can see from the photos - its just stunning Turquoise Blue Sea !! ~ well worth a visit.. BUT - Be careful if you book a tour with a safari company.. The 4wd vehicle on our tour broke down twice in the first few days, and was out of action, we was offered a 2wd "Yellow School Bus" to continue the tour.. But ower Grant Charlesworth , of Frontier Safari / Australian Wild Escapes, refused us a refund, cause we refused the "alternate transport".. The tour was cancelled on day 4 and we all flew back to Cairns and stayed at Bay Village Retreat (see review)..We took the matter to Office Of Fair Trading, but Grant Charlesworth had liquidated the company, also the driver and cook had not been paid their wages for the trip..So be careful when you choose a safari company, They are trading still under the nameAustralian Wild Escapes (Oceania) Pty LtdThe Ferry from Horn Island jetty to Thursday island was a good experience, lovely blue sea..

Drop in a jig....catch live bait in an instance and then chuck out a handline and bring in a good catch every time!!! Extremely enjoyable!
