A lovely light lunch overlooking the picturesque Moorabool River, served by the lovely Tim, Jo and Estelle with some excellent Moorabool Ridge wine.
Sometimes it's a nice change to get away from the bigger and brassier wineries, with their full car parks, push-sell tasting and cavernous buildings, and get closer to the vines and the people producing the wines in a setting that would be hard to beat. That's why we visited Moorabool Ridge Winery again yesterday. On a balmy warm day, sitting on some rustic furniture outside of the 1856 shepherd's cottage( now the HQ for the MRW), patting a lazy old red cattledog, and gazing over the valley of the Moorabool RIver with some quintessential Australian views, was a relaxing way to spend a couple of hours. The Winery has a range of basic but quite acceptable snacks available for purchase with their wines - cheese platters, dips, foccacias and the like - and their well-priced wines (two or three white and two red varieties) are well-regarded. With an olive grove also on site, the MRW has a wide range of olive products, and jams and pastes available for tasting and purchase. While it's not on a main road, the winery is well-signed on the Ballarat side of Lethbridge and is about 3 km off the Midland Highway. We'd be very surprised if you didn't enjoy a visit there as well do every once in a while. So, if you want to plan a visit to an interesting area, not far off the beaten track, try a visit to this winery owned and operated by real people not by an international conglomerate and which, without the bells and whistles, makes for an enjoyable couple of hours.
