This road is an alternative to the faster Bussel Highway from Dunsborough to near Augusta and is nearer to the coast. It is about 70 kms long. Driving it in early autumn we almost had the road to ourselves and the dappled light through the forests reminded us of French country roads - in a couple of places it was wonderfully pretty and atmospheric. We stopped at Hamelin Bay to find a long beach with talcum powder sand and clear turquoise sea - lovely! Add to this the caves, the restaurants and the two Capes with lighthouses -with Augusta at the end - then you have a peaceful, unspoiled and interesting day's drive. Don't miss it.
I am traveling with a family with 3 young kids. With a rented car, GPS and Google map, we journeyed from Perth city to Bindoon and headed south towards Margaret River and Augusta. With a young family, there is not much activities planned for my wife and I. Even the visit to the wineries were kept to a minimal as I need to drive. No drink and drives. With a lodging booked at Busselton, we have daily long drives to explore the surrounding areas and personally, the drive along Caves Road was my highlight of the trip. With kids tucked in, I love the quiet drives along the Caves Road. The towering trees casted a heavy shadow upon parts of the roads, allowing little sunshine to peak in. Once a while, an odd vehicle will pass you by. The occasional sign boards of the caves and wineries remind you that there is some human interaction with the plentiful mother nature. Radio reception is not good but a favorite CD will complete the experience. Coming from Singapore, we are not used to such vastness of nature and this drive was a rich experience that allowed me to soak in the beauty and greatness of natural. In fact I took deliberate detours from Margaret River town to enjoy this drive. It is a work of nature, not to be missed. For some of who have rated try this lowly, maybe we are just looking for different things. But for me, this was the best experience from Western Australia. Look forward to be back.
The road is nice but it's all forest so don't expect amazing views. You also have to focus on the road because of all the tourist traffic turning without looking! Better to head to augusta on the main highway and return to dunsborough voids caves road.
Lots of easily accessible attractions such as Lake Cave and Mammoth Cave. Very close to Margaret River
If you're heading south to Augusta, try Caves Road as an alternative for the Bussel Hwy. As a via point drop by Jewel Cave and attend the tour.
If it isnt your first time visiting such caves, you might want to prioritize or short-list one or two to visit so to save time if you are going down to the lighthouse
I arrived in Margaret River by bus, ready to explore its historical adventures, but only to discover there was no public transport available! Then I was handed a brochure that claimed to expose the Margaret River with my desired dreams. One simple phone call and Hank arrived with his comfortable 4WD and off we drove into the twilight shift. From the Ancient Empire Forests of 400 yr old giants, driving towards the crystal clear Southern Ocean Coast, we wavier across the roof tops of many caves and stop to explore within and outside the majestic cave formations and surroundings. More stops to enjoy and observe in abundance the beautiful flora/fauna as we make our way to the end of the most educating and worthwhile journey. Thanks, Hank. Bless You.
There are plenty of wineries along caves road & this leads to all of the scenic hotspots, plus caves road itself has many tree-lined areas
Awesome drive. We drove through cave road to visit the three different caves and it was very good. The roads have all the signs on the way so one doesn't miss it.
So many wineries, breweries & activities that are absolute must see's along this road! Its a fantastic drive too for all you car enthusiast ;P just be prepared for some scrapes if you car is lowered
we went to Hamelin beach travelled all the way on caves road, so easy you really can't get lost, nice and shaded so very cool in the height of summer
Picturesque drive indeed - plenty of tree tunnels! Don't forget to turn on your lights as the shadows make it a tad hard to see oncoming cars.
If you have a manual and a turbo or two then you'll love the corners. Some great winding corners and straights. Just take it easy with passing traffic on the narrow sections. There are also trees very close to the road.
Excellent road to drive on. Don't expect too many straight sections as it winds in and around the land but a well maintained road. Lovely glimpses of vineyards.
So loved the old eucalyptus forests along the road. The trips to various bays. I was disappointed at the lack of villages. So many photo shoots, so many birds. Loved the drive.
