From various viewpoints this crater is amazing. It has it's own micro environment and is well sustained by the Islanders. Sadly part of the rim is being eroded so some of the adjacent petroglyphs are no longer accessible and neither is the opportunity to walk the rim. But be assured this a wondrous location to experience

The crater is amazing to view. Walk around it as much as you can. Nearby are the remains of dwellings used when men swam out to a nearby island to retrieve a sooty tern egg.

I did the hike from the town up Orongo to the Crater. The view enroute was awesome but arrival at the Crater's edge was breathtaking. It's truly a magical environmental wonder. This was my 2nd most favorite place on the island. Don't miss it.

The ancient sacred village of Orongo is the setting of the famous Birdman race. The setting of this village is dramatic as it is located next to the volcano crater of Rano Rau and also the cliff edge facing the Pacific ocean! Beautiful in every way!

This is where the birdman competition started in the 3rd epoch of the island. It lies on the rim of a volcanic crater, in itself a great sight and a micro environment. The houses are interesting as the were meant only for sleeping and rain cover, so dark thin with small entrances. Great view of the 3 islands and ocean and well worth 3-4 hours to see the village and crater. When you think you've seen Easter island, there is more

Very impressive and well worth the scenic drive up the hill to see it. A few good scenic spots along the way, This is free and a few yards past it yo can view< with an admission fee, some historic sites of ancient people who lived on Easter Island.

This is a must see - amazing views of both the crater and the ocean - take a guide or read up to learn about the ceremonies performed here - and they have a nice little museum, too.

The whole island is magic, but Orongo has it special "temper". It's a nice place to appreciate the nature and feel how small we are in this world. All the water inside the crater is used to supply the island, it's fascinating how one volcano could have create the island, destroyed part of the island and now start again to help the island to survive. One of my best pictures were taken in this place. Take the hint: panoramic picture was invented to be used in this crater.

RandSand

A fascinating glimpse of the past on Rapa Nui! The volcano is adjacent, and there are excellent pictographs on the rocks.

This extinct volcano has an almost perfectly circular crater, blown out on one side by an ancient eruption,; the bottom is filled with plant-covered water, and there is a circular path around the top of the crater. The crater is approx. 1 1/2 kms across, and the hike around took me two hours(bad legs...). Perfect view of the two islands where the annual Birdmen race took place

We almost didnt stop here, but based on others reviews, were swayed and we are glad we did. The crater lake is awesome, and the village of the Orongo impressive (though it was disappointing to see how the Americans desecrated the site in the 1800's). Visitors center has interpretive information.

Loved this and all the legends around the bird men and how the first to find the first Sooty Tern egg of the year defined which family would rule for the next year. It was an extraordinary feat of strength and endurance
