Excursions on Easter Island are very expensive. Our hotel was quoting £100 for a half day trip each. There were four trips we wanted to do and were looking at paying £800 !!!. Our receptionist recommended our going into town and renting car, rental and petrol cost £130. The car rental meant we were able to visit the sights when the tour buses had gone and several times. We visited this site on four occasions at different times of day for the light and weather condition's. The 15 Maoi heads are on a platform with their backs to the sea. Whichever way you come upon the site it is amazing! The heads look towards the crater and quarry where they were excavated.

Our first day after Rano Raraku we visited the 15 restored Moai at Ahu Tongariki. Our guide recounted the restoration and showed where the new concrete was placed after many were knocked down by a tsunami. Only one had a topknot. The site overlooked a ceremonial plain and the Moai looked toward the village. As it was on the ocean, photography was difficult late am due to position of the sun. The site is laid out for ceremony and not just the Moai. Very interesting were the 2 triangular stone about 18 inches apart and 18 inches high some 2-300 yards on the plain, inland from the Moai. Kneeling ones legs on the stones our guide told us was how the builder achieved perfect alignment of the plaza platform with the horizon. And true! If you put your knees on the stone the top of the platform on which the Moai stand is perfectly across the horizon. Another great site on this island

Tongariki is the largest flatform including 15 restored moais set on a dramatic coastline.. We visited this site multiple times during our weeklong stay. The mood and atmosphere varies depending on the time of day and we found sunrise and mid to late afternoon the best times for photography! Rent a car and the drive from Hanga Roa is 25 mins during the day and 45 mins in the dark! The sunrise at Tongariki is a very special experience & should not be missed!

We visited this site a couple of times during our trip to Rapa Nui. It's just amazing. Try to go with a guide so they can explain you about its restorarion. Many photo ops, specially during sunrise. Magical and awe-inspiring.

This is the site you see most often in pictures and it's well worth a visit. We happened to have the archaeologist who led the efforts to restore the site as our guide. It's very helpful to have someone explaining how they went through the process to restore the site. Going at sunrise or sunset gives you some interesting light for your photos.

We visited this ahu during early afternoon one day and then again the following day at sunrise. Same place, but such different experiences. The moai are stylistically diverse and seeing them side by side gives you a first-hand look at the evolving artistic techniques of the carvers. Then to go back and see them in early dawn light, dark and mysterious and indistinct, is a great experience. If the weather cooperates, as it did for us, the best is yet to come as the sun rises behind the moai, putting on a majestic show.Highly recommended.

I took a book out, sat down about 100 meters, right in front of the 15 Moais at Ahu Tongariki, read, watched the clouds drifting over the ocean behind the statues, some birds sitting on several of the heads; I felt as if the statues were talking to me...I know I will be back - they are calling me!

Ahu Tangariki was incredible, and I would suggest seeing at multiple times (sunrise, sunset...) as each visit we made had more incredible views than the previous. Since the island is small, we rented a car for our four night visit, which gave us the flexability to see and do what we wanted on our own schedule.

The best light on the Moais is at the evening! If you are lucky, sunrise will be amazing and without clouds or rain!

Located far from everything, this is a peaceful place with amazing views. All accompanied by 15 restored Moai on a large Ahu. Too beautiful and special to describe. Be sure to visit Ahu Tongariki, otherwise you cannot you've visited Easter Island.

The scale of this place is amazing and since the have put one of the headpieces on when they restored the Moai it is particularly interesting
