If you want to see how the locals enjoy life, this is the place to visit. Great beer in liters or half liters from the monks with local food stalls serving every manner of local cuisine at great value. Just watching the family gatherings and old friends enjoying themselves is a nice experience. You can even bring your own picnic, which many do. The beer is quite refreshing. You choose your mug, rinse it in the fountain and buy a ticket. Then you tell the gruff guy at the tap whether you want strong beer or pilsner. Try them both. It doesn't open until 2 or 3pm, so don't come for lunch unless its a late one. In the summer, there is a big communal beer garden. In winter a huge beer hall.

The Augustine Monastry is an amazing place. It combines not only a place of worship, but a brewery since 1620 as well. There are three main halls with one for smoking amid butchers, bakers and shops selling fast food. Very busy and definitely a regular haunt for the locals, this amazing family friendly venue also produces its own beer, served in clay steins.

Our Sound of Music Tour guide Peter told us about this place and we are so glad we made the trip to experience it. It is a large beer hall (3 in fact) attached to a church. You drink beer from steiner jugs and there is typical Austrian food available from stalls surrounding the halls- we had schnitzel, sausage, ribs and they were delicious. It is open 3pm-11pm- we went for the opening and it quickly filled up- mainly pensioners and tourists at that time! We took our kids and they were not out of place- juice available. I have hear this place described as being like Hogwarts but with beer and that really is how it feels- you must go!

We walked to this place from our hotel, and it was worth the walk. The food wasn't all that great but the whole atmosphere of the place, along with the beer was an experience that I will not forget. Before we left, we bought some mugs and walked back to our hotel. If you're visiting Salzburg, make sure you stop by this place.

One of the best places. Like a big old school dinner hall, full of atmosphere, where you can drink beer from a clay pot you wash yourself. Striking up new acquaintances with locals was easy...seems to be the reason for going, and plenty of cheap eats too...but take your own food if you like. Kids are ok to go too. We loved it

We went here on our second of 2 nights in Salzburg after dinner to have a beer. It was a Sunday night so not very full but the atmosphere was still great and the beer was fantastic. Definitely worth going to.

Had loads of fun here drinking out of steins, the beer made by monks. Very strong so beware! Never experienced this before but it was amazing. Plenty of tradional food stalls next to the main hall for you to purchase some tasty treats to soak up the beer. The place is like something out of a harry potter film but with alcohol! What a weird and wonderful time we had.

This beer place in an old abbey is really nice and you can properly enjoy your drinks. Despite this the beer itself was quite cheep and therfore not excellent, the food as well was not good; one could choose between several seller but none looked great to me. Perfect for a pint with friends but eat before.

This has to be one of the best beer halls in Salzburg, if not Austria/Germany. There are lots of rooms to choose from, one of which frequently has live music. The location is great, near the city and relatively easy to get to by public transport. There are little stalls around the edges of the building where you can buy all the local delicacies and take them back to your table to drink with the local beer. The building itself is lovely, an old monastery, so do explore and also check out how the true locals operate. You can keep your Stein under lock and key right there, never having to take it home or share it with others.

The local brew was great, we had to share a table with others, which led to an interesting 1/2 English 1/2 German conversation and a lot of hand gestures

I love this place. If you live here, if you are visiting, young, old, anywhere in between... this beer hall is really something special. Just sit down with friends and beer mugs. You can even bring your own food from home, or get some delicious leberkäse or Stelz'n from the vendors in the food hall. Particularly if you have the chance to sit outside on a summer evening, this place is not to be missed.

If you're in Salzburg...heck, if you're in Munich, take the trip...and you like beer, you MUST visit the Augustiner Braustubl. The experience is so cool! Other reviews have already covered the process, so I won't repeat that here. All I will say is this must be experienced in-person. I echo the reviewer who said this should be the number one reason to visit Salzburg. Do not miss this!

We went to quite a few beer houses on our trip through Switzerland, Austria, and Germany and this was our favourite. We even had our kids in tow. Everyone was jolly, there were some men stumbling... we got to go through the food hall and pick out everything that we wanted. We got our mugs, gave them a rinse and filled up. We stayed for a couple of hours and enjoyed the atmosphere and by the time we were ready to leave we were slightly tipsy and completely filled up on delicious food!

I came here roughly 20 years ago as a young kid traveling Europe and this was one of the best beer garden experience I had ever had. I would always remember it fondly and that is why I came back this month. When I was young I went in the early evening and sat in the outdoor beer garden and couldn't afford to buy food. This time the beer garden was closed due to weather and I arrived starving so I bought a pretzel and 1/2 chicken (both good). To be honest, there is nothing like the first time but it was still cool (I mean where else can you eat with Jesus watching you?) and I'm glad I came back. Here are some tips for you all to make your experience the best:1) use Google maps real-time to find it. There are 2-3 entrances. The main entrance which Google maps will point you to or a few side street doors. I saw a lot of people wandering around trying to find it but not successful also because the side doors weren't open yet which leads me to tip #22) VERY IMPORTANT: the place doesn't open until 3 PM, plan accordingly3) inside seating is mostly reserved for families who have paid to sit there on specific days so get there early if you want yo have a chance at an unreserved inside table4) you can bring your own food to eat
