We came to this island for a week following a recommendation by an acquaintance. We were not disappointed. We have been travelling around Europe for 3 months and needed some R&R, and we found it here. It is a beautiful island which does not require summer heat to enjoy the sights it offers, both in the towns and in the mountains as well as the beautiful beaches. I'm sure it would buzz in summer as well, so make a choice, you will not be disappointed. The local people are open, friendly and generous and go out of their way to make you welcome, though they found it hard to understand we would come to Samos in November!

It is very similar to Chios Island. But Samos is a bit newer. The food is really good and the beaches are awesome. One should spent at least 2 days to travel around the island, see the archelogical museums both in Pythgarion and Samos Town and the very beautiful beaches.Avoid hot season. October is really nice to travel around and go to the beach.

Samos is the midst of a total make-over. Which means we visited it when about the whole seaport area was a construction site. Maybe Samos will be a nice town after the refurbishing of the harbor site, but for the moment it isn't so special.

Avoid Samos Town, a stroll at night and the horrible odour from the harbour will have you running away in no time but do see and/or stay in Kokkari, Pythagorion which are the obvious charming places and do not miss the hidden treasures in the mountainous part of the island, the villages of Manolates, Vourliotes for great view, a cool breeze and good authentic food. During your stay try at least once to experience the open air cinema at Mitilinii village where you can order pizza or kebap (for 7 euros) and you each get free loukoumades (fried pancakes) freshly- made by the cute grandmother that you see outside as you go in the cinema. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of the odd cat or two as the go by in front of the screen!

If you ever get to the island of Samos and if you only have the time to do one thing, visit Pythagorioan this is the real Greek Agean village. The colour alone is breathtaking, the houses, the narrow cobbled streets, the quiet busle all around you the flowers in the windowboxes with the smell of perfume in the air...the little beach at Potami a few steps away says relax to the harbour with the statue of the great man overlooking all and I almost forgot, the people...they know how to make you feel at home.....it is a hidden jewel.

Avoid going to Samos Town as the harbour front is under reconstruction. Our travel agent THOMSON does not mention this on its website / brochure. Be aware to avoid disappointment.

Samos is a hustle bustle town with ferries dropping off in the habour. Old Vathi on the hill is also charming. many shops, bars and restaurants.

What a wonderful island with amazing people and fantastic hospitality. For a taste of real Greece make sure to visit Platanos village the highest island of the island. Also Manolates village and Potami waterfall for a rustic feel. The best beach is definitely Tsabou.

Nice small city. Port, the old city, calm, view, terraces.....museum, wine museum an ideal holiday place.

Cooling breezes on north side. Green with scent of herbs and flowers. Lots of walks and bike trails.

We were island hopping in April and May 2014, a relaxed 6-week trip with no pre-booking. Arrived Kokkari mid-May and loved our week there. Obviously there were no crowds at that time of year but everything was open so plenty of choice of accommodations and places to eat and drink. People really friendly (as on all the islands we have visited). Also, think it might have been exceptionally hot for the time of year, so that was great too. Recommend staying in Kokkari and having a car to tour around the island.

Kokkari must be the most wonderful and peaceful place I’ve ever been. Friendly and heartwarming people who goes out of their way to make your stay a fab one. Kokkari is not flooded by tourists - perhaps the best reason for coming here. It’s a place for charging your batteries, and for relaxation. Kokkari is the genuine Greece.Beaches are mainly pebble beaches with wonderful crystal clear waters. Good variety of tavernas and shops.Tips: I would highly recommend restaurant Mezedaki. Its run by the lovely Sophia, with equally lovely staff, and it's hugely popular due to the fantastic service, and heavenly fresh homemade food.

Samos is quite green, I guess they have their quota of rain. The locals are very friendly, the beaches are nice and peaceful (no watersports) and no rowdy bars ! Wonderful island, please go and have a look yourself .
