byzantine museum (vizantino museo)

When we visited, several galleries were closed. So my impression is that the museum, naturally, is mainly concerned with the development of Greek art during the Byzantine period. The exhibits are well displayed with information in Greek and English. Much is concerned with icons and religious art of the 16th and 17th centuries. From what we could see, I consider it a small museum (see the website www.byzantinemuseum.gr/en/) so for that I rate it average. However, a visit can be combined with the adjacent Athens War Museum.

This is not to be missed, if you want to see something besides the "Classical Greek" attractions! This museum presents a HUGE amount of history, that is often overlooked by the casual tourist, but is just as important as the Acropolis in understanding the world we live in today. Don't miss it.

After the Acropolis museum, this is the second must-see museum in Athens. It has a vast exhibition taking you through time, starting at the introduction of christianity in the west-roman empire. It has really good explanations everywhere and very interesting artefacts. Great location, as you are right next to the parliament and close to Plaka.

A very nice museum, very close to the center of Athens. It is very interesting, even for those who are not so interested in museums and history. Go for a visit and then for a coffee or meal at a restaurant in Athens' center.

The museum is amazing! We were lucky because the National Gallery was being renovated and the Byzantine had works from El Greco on loan.

One of the most important national museums.The artifacts,exceed 30000 and dated from the 3rd to the 20th century.Highly recommended to pay a visit.

Interesting assortment of clothing, artifacts, and the like from the various regions of Greece. Again, it is a small museum.

A really good collection that is worth visiting if you want to learn more holistically about the greek culture!

For those that want to look at slightly newer historical items of Greece, the Byzantine Museum is a good option to explore. It is housed within a very cosy little building next to the War Museum, you can take the metro to Evangelimos (hope I got the spelling right) station and walk for about 3 minutes to this museum. A very orthodox collection, but worth-visiting.

Really interesting and colorful collection of Byzantine period arts. Worth visiting even if you are not interested in it.

Big and atmospheric, very orthodox, all the Russian and other orthodox tourist should definitely see, it's very modern at the same time

As the name states, this is the museum to go for Byzantine art - i.e. the art of the Eastern Roman Empire of the medieval Greek world, which the historians renamed into "Byzantine" Empire. The highlight of the museum is the excellent collection of Orthodox icons.

Byzantine Museum is not so well known in Athens, as the Acropolis or the Archaeological Museum. Though, it is an oasis in the centre of Athens, as it takes you from the ancient years to the Byzantine years of the Greek History.In a quiet almost magical setting, away from the urban noises, different collections of byzantine findings, such as Orthodox icons, coins, jewels, travel you back to the Oecumene of the Eastern Roman Empire.So take 3-4 hours of your Athenian schedule, and dedicate it to the Byzantine Museum. It will reward you!

though half of the Museum was closed dec. 2014 i visited the museum before and i must say together with the brother museum in thessaloniki are the 2 most wonderful museum of its kind.

This museum is well done, with a terrific collection of Byzantine art. It is near public transportation so access is easy via the Metro. There is a good cafe for lunch or coffee or a glass of wine afterwards. It is a must see while visiting Athens.
