The church is situated halfway up a rocky wall, it has a famous organ and an altar tryptichon from the late middle ages of unknown origin. To get to it, many stairs have to be climbed, but it is worth it

... and once you're in Idar-Oberstein, why not? It's not a long climb - to call it a "hike" is a joke - not a special chapel (in my opinion), they charge you admission although there is nothing to see... but then again, might as well do it and hopefully support a good cause. From the church balcony you can see the town and imagine what it looked like when the river run through it instead of the high street nowadays covering the water way. A big difference I imagine.

Just a small walk up the side of the 'hill' to the church. Interesting position above the city. Construction works going on so entrance through a tunnel. Small entrance fee. You can also see the clocktower from up close and there's a terrace for a panorama view of Idar-Oberstein.

You have to enjoy a nice walk to be able to enjoy the Felsenkirchen, and every footstep is worth it!!!! And you can continue to walk up the hill to the two castles, which give an amazing view of the town of Oberstein! And as other raters have said... enjoy an Idar-Obersteiner Spiessbraten afterwards. There are several wonderful restaurants to give it a try!

I lived across the street from the "Church on the Rock" and loved to walk up there on weekends or run to the top of the hill to Schloss Oberstien in the mornings. I would recommend the hike, followed by a spiessbraten in town. Idar-Oberstien is the only place to get proper spiessbraten.

We enjoyed the walk and visit of the Felsenkirche. It has a nice view. We continued our walk (10 minutes more) to the top and also visited Schloss Oberstein, you can have a drink (local Kirner beer) at the terrace or inside and follow the road down to the village again.

I' haven't been in the church yet but it is beautiful from the outside and the views near the church are absolutely stunning. Well worth the hike up the stairs. It is absolutely beautiful in the snow. The church closes down in October due to the weather.

After 20-30 minutes walk (200 steps) from the town you will reach the church. We walked with our baby in hand. It's a small church which has a great view over the town. Cheap entrance. About 30 minutes needed to see everything. Worth the walk!

In the heart of Oberstein is the Felsenkirche, a church sits half-way up the cliffs from the downtown area to Schloss Oberstein. This unique church sits high enough in the cliffs to offer a commanding view of Oberstein. A hearty amount of stair climbing is involved to get to the entrance tunnel of Felsenkirche; however, the coolness of the tunnel and church make the ascent very rewarding. A small entrance fee (2 Euros adults, 50 Euro cents children) helps maintain the church and the cliff side for future generations. If you are in Oberstein, take the 30 minutes to explore the Felsenkirche. Parking is available throughout Oberstein and the closest parking facility is at the Theater parking garage.

I cannot believe anyone could come to this small town and not visit this church which I have been told is unique. On a nice day it is worth coming up just for the view. Be warned though it means climing a lot of steps to get here! Once inside the rock the air is still and cool and the church has a serene atmosphere. Take a look at the altar painting and the rock crystal repersentation of Jesus. Also do not mis the X shaped agate and other exhibits in the glass cases before looking at the natural spring and climbing up to the viewing platform which is a great place for photos.TIP - if you want to avoid most of the steps I am told you can drive up some of the way but you will need to verify this.

The site of the church built into the mountain is really awesome to see. We plugged the address from this site into our GPS, but it will lead you to private parking only. You must park near the pedestrian town center (we paid a few euro for 4 hours) and follow the signs through the town to Felsenkirche. It is probably about 100 steps to the top, but there are plenty of places to rest along the way if needed. Our 3 and 5 year old did not have a problem with the stairs and were very excited about the whole experience. The entrance price of 2euro for adults and free for our kiddos was very reasonable. We spent about 15 minutes exploring the church and enjoying the view from the balcony. If you're up to it I would recommend the extra .8km walk to the top of the mountain to visit the castle.

Small church set in mountainside. Strolled through the beautiful small town and up the stairs, then walkways, and more stairs! When you finally make it to the top the small church is quiet & quaint! Go up a few additional stairs to the outside balcony and be sure to take some panoramic pictures of the town below!

We stopped in Idar-Oberstein on our last day in Germany on our way up to Frankfurt. The whole town is beautiful and worth a walk through. The walk up to the church may be hard for some people but it's certainly doable and there are benches along the way. It's cool to walk into the main entrance of the church through the tunnel built in the rock. The whole history of the church is fascinating and there are some amazing views of the top. If you are nearby, it's worth stopping by to check out!

Once you arrive in the town square filled with shops and restaurants, its a moderate walk up some 100 steps to the church in the Mountain. Visit the church and then go have lunch.
