If you want to explore Norwegian wildlife and spectacular scenery to it's fullest, this is NOT for you. Bymarka ("City woods") is full of paths, lighted paths, ski tracks and people. BUT it is close to the city, highly accessible, DOES have a lot of more remote areas and "gems" and also includes a small mountain treck, if you are up for it. The view from the forest edges over the Trondheim fjord is also good. So, for its relative quality this close to a large Norwegian city, this scores quite well. There are several web pages that gives you information on what to do and where to go in Bymarka. Buses and the tram line runs up to different starting destinations fairly frequently.

Bymarka is a very nice recreation area close to the city of Trondheim. Definitely worth is a ride with the "trikk" to Lian. From this place there are several nice trails into the forest, to the lakes.

I've been walking and skiing in "Bymarka" many, many times. There are offers for "everybody", from very small children or seniors to the young and very fit. get a map, study the timetables for the buses and pick a trip/trail that You believe will suit You. There are several huts that serve coffe, cakes and light meals in the weekends and in the high season. For lazy trips, a walk on the road to the Rønningen hut has always been a favourite with children - and now grandchildren. And if it is snow, we will bring a sledge for the trip back. If You only have a day in the city, the parts just above the city above "byåsen" ("the city hill") might be a good choice. small lakes, grand views, light trails and so on. Both walkers, runners, bikers and skiers will have something to choose from.

Bymaka is a forest close to Trondheim with a wealth of opportunities for those who like nature and outdoor activities. Here you can find hills, trails, lakes, and some nice views of Trondheim and the surrounding area. You can go hiking, mountain biking, running, cross country skiing (in winter), swimming in the lakes, and more. There are also a few cabins (Elgsethytta, Grønlia, Lavollen, Rønningen, Skistua) that serve coffee, freshly baked cinnamon buns etc, and sometimes even dinner. However, be aware that they have limited opening hours.I recommend going to one of the bookstores in Trondheim and asking for a map of the trails in Bymarka. There are so many trails and places to go, and it is not possible to see it all on Google Maps. Bymarka is located west of the city of Trondheim, and you may access it by simply walking or riding your bike there from the city. You also have the option of taking bus number 10 towards Skistua which brings you right into the center of Bymarka.

We took a guided tour from our cruise ship and found Bymarka a lovely walk with trails, lakes, nature all part of the view. Not sure if we really needed to do the guided tour as the guides provided little in background, however I can imagine if you have a limited timeline , you could get lost, have a tough time getting a taxi back and miss your docking time. That's expensive! The people of Trondheim have a treasure there, as its so very close to the city and judging by the fact most of the reviews I see come from locals, they must understand how lucky they are to have such a beautiful place to go on a sunny afternoon.

Go from bottom to top, with a mountainbike, and enjoy the many trails downhill. NB! Respect the hikers!

I have been in Bymarka many many times since I moved here, but not enough. I know roughly the area, but it is big! The best thing about Bymarka is that it is so close to the city center and there are many trails you can take, depending on how much time you want to spend there. If you want to hike overnight, that is not a problem, there are different trails with different starting points, they have a few cafes around to stop for a coffee and there are several beautiful lakes where you can go swimming in the summer. The lakes are of course a lot warmer than the cold fjord sea water along the coast. If you are in a wheelchair, they have a trail that is paved around Haukvatnet, making it easier for you and with its wheelchair accessible ramp into the water. It is beautifully surrounded by forest and a few open areas where they have activities regularly for those who visit. In the winter, you have a lot of tracks for cross country skiing if you enjoy that! In any case, it is a must visit if you have the time and want to see the beautiful Norwegian nature.

On hot summers days it's great to go swimming in the many lakes in Byåsen and Bymarka. Lianvannet and Kyvannet are the most easily accessed, both reached by tram which goes from St. Olavs gate. If you follow the footpath that goes south of the end tram stop you will find another lake, Haukvatnet which has been made accessible for wheelchair users. Both of these lakes have got floating docks with diving towers. Kyvannet only have a diving board on the north shore opposite of the tram stop which is a popular hangout for teenagers. The lakes Theisendammen and Baklidammen lie above the Ila and Ilsvika neighbourhoods. There is a small stream that runs from Theisendammen towards the picturesque former fishing village of Ilsvikøra. If you feel sporty you could walk up along the footpath that partially runs along the stream. It's a very picturesque path decorated with sculptures along the way. Theisendammen has a floating dock near the dam itself and although the small beach by the north eastern side of the dam isn't the most pleasant it's a very popular bathing spot during the summer due to it's location near the city centre. It's also near the folk museum of Sverresborg. You can reach Baklidammen by following the footpath along the western side of the lake, besides the Sommerseter golf course. Baklidammen is very picturesque surrounded by pine trees and a great spot for jogging.

A good way to spend a day is heading to Bymarka, the biggest forrest near the city of Trondheim. Bymarka has several tracks for walking and bycycling and in the winter cross country ski tracks. If your tired of the city just head here and enjoy the silence it will give you.

Take the tram to Lian and walk around the lake. It only takes an hour to walk the full circle and the area is very peaceful and relaxing.

Recommended to dress comfortably. The hike was at a leisurely pace and it was a good workout at the end of the 2 hours! Remember to try the Norwegian Cinnamon rolls at the city centre after the hike.

So easy to reach, and beautiful. We simply walked out of the hotel, went past the tunnel at the edge of town, and started our hike up the mountain. 3 km later (and 400 vertical meters) we were on the top of a hill with great vistas over the fjord and valley. Then walked over to Lian (couple of easy hours) and took the tram back.Just plan ahead for the tram though! No ticket machine at the Lian stop, so you either have to have cash to buy on board, or get a 24 hour pass.

There are many options to choose from. I use Bymarka for hiking, skiing, fishing, bicycling. If I were to recommend a few places to go I'd say Holstvollen, the trail from Kopperdammen to Baklidammen, and Geitfjellet.
