Firstly, a big thank you to all the previous reviewers. I would not have found Birius had it not been for you. Secondly, a big thank you to the Bouyer Family for the amazing tour and experience. We improved our knowledge on the production of Cognac & Pineau and it was very interesting to learn about the positive and necessary relationship that exists between the growers/producers and the major cognac houses. If you are in the area and have a car then you should take the time for a visit. I did not find a Pineau or VSOP during my trip that was superior to Birius and the XO is also top shelf. If I lived in the UK or other parts of Europe then I would have taken home case lots in my car. Sadly, we are only able to bring home 2 bottles each (duty free) and you may be interested to know that our purchases at Birius comprised 50% of that meagre allotment.....and we were in France for 2 weeks!

Called last year and were made very welcome by Phillipe who showed us around and explained the cognac distilling process and the barrels of cognac maturing in his cellars. Bought samples of his products which were so good they didn't last long once we got home.Just had to call again and found Phillipe just as welcoming and we bought a lot more than last time. Cognac, wine and Pinneau.Forget the big brandy producers, this is the real experience of a genuine, French, family business. Long may it thrive and with his wonderful family I am sure the future is deservedly secure. We will be back.

We had a great private tour and tasting with the owner's daughter and soon to be owner herself. She was superbly knowledgable about everything, from the market mechanisms, making of cognac, economies of cognac making, history etc. If you're looking for an alternative to the big houses, somewhere with heart and charm, I recommend Birius. And of course, the cognac and the pineau (or how you spell it) was great. Just make sure you bring cash in case the card machine fails.

4 of us visited Birius after a recommendation. We have done the Hennessy/Remy Martin tours and we much preferred this one as it was much more personable, and free! The owners daughter Elodie took us around and gave the tour in English. It was all very interesting and lovely to see a family run business working so well. The tour was just right, I have found some of the bigger tours in Cognac to drag on a bit! At the end of the tour we had a tasting session and it was great to be able to try the pineau and wine as well as the cognac. The red pineau and the red wine were my favourites, but I also really enjoyed the rose wine and I'm not normally a fan. A lot of their produce has won some pretty serious awards, they really know their stuff. It is also all very reasonably priced, very good value for money. A most enjoyable visit, we will certainly be returning. Thank you Elodie and the rest of the Bouyer family!

Met some friends from London who were staying in the Cognac area, I was staying nearby and we were recommended a visit to this distillery. We turned up, after hearing good things about Domaine De Birius, expectations were high, we had saved this visit until last. We had already seen 2 other Pinneau destilleries.Phillipe guided us through his warehouse and destillery with tastings in front of his copper stil with detailed explanations behind his eau de vie, cognacs and pineau. Though a busy man im sure, he was patient and gave us time from his day.If it wasn't enough having such an interesting and personal tour, the produce from Birius was equally special. I would have spent all my money there but needed what I had left to get me home! I bought a bottle of the X0 30yr, worth paying the extra for a carafe! I also bought a bottle of their orange liqueur and a bottle each of the red and white pineau.Merci Phillipe! I said I would be back next year and im looking to keep that promise.

Together with a friend I had the pleasure to visit this small cognac producer. This producer was chosen because of its location in Petite Champagne. We had no expectations when arriving, but were overwhelmed by the friendliness we were received with. It was the oldest daughter in the house (generation 12) who showed us around. She was very knowledgable and managed to answer all our questions in in a very good way. In addition, we got the story of her family. At the end of the visit we got the chance to try their products. They were all good. Our favourite was the XO, this was superb and very modestly priced. Around 50 Euros for a 30 year old cognac is a good deal. Unfortunately wed did not buy anything, we regret on that and will make sure that we stop here next time we are in Cognac to buy it. The pineau was also good.If you want to meet one of the smaller producers, this is abolutely a good alternative, particularly in Petite Champagne.

My wife and I know nothing about Cognac so thought we might be fish out of water visiting a Cognac producer. Elodie was so welcoming and really loves what she does, showing us all the different processes and demonstrating an amazing knowledge of her traditions and products. We visited many vineyards on our trip but this visit was by far our favourite mainly due to the friendly welcome and the interesting tour.

This was a most pleasant visit to a small (but very professional and traditional) producer. There are not many signs until the turn-off but the location is easy enough to find. We were greeted by the current owner Philippe Birius who very generously gave up his time to give a guided tour and complete guide to cognac production before a free tasting of a selection of Birius products (including excellent Pineau des Charentes and 30 year old XO cognac). The wines / cognacs on sale are exceptionally reasonably priced and we quite happily filled the boot with a few cartons. Highly recommended as an experience of a small-scale producer away from the soulless big brands.
