Love this castle! Very beautiful. In the town where my dad grew up which is cool. Was greeted by Chris Timmins who was extremely nice to me as I am canadian and he had spent lots of time there. He even gave us a little tour. What a great guy! He is very knowledgable about the castle and the era in which it was built. Top notch customer service in my opinion. Even though the castle is old and mostly ruins it was worth the visit because it takes you back in time. The reddish stone which it is made of is very pleasing to the eye. Spent my time there imagining what it could have been like to live in it! Awesome!

As others have stated, it's currently being restored so you can only explore about half of the castle right now. Even so, much has been destroyed over the years, so it's not the best example of a Scottish castle anyway. However, the gentleman who worked there was absolutely wonderful. He helped us decided what kind of Historic Scotland pass to buy for the amount of time we were going to be in the country and definitely saved us over $100!

took some old friends around this loveable castle which is not far from where I live and it is such a peaceful area and although they have built houses nearby still stands out to those from Uddingston and Bothwell great wee castle got a small shop well worth a visit

Will be back hopefully when the work is finished but in spite of the renovations still enjoyed the visit. The chap in the shop this afternoon (oct 14th) was great - very friendly and informative and he helped to make the visit worthwhile - he is a credit to Historic Scotland.

Quite an impressive castle, let down by our bad timing as large sections are closed off to the public for restoration and repairs. We'll definitely go back next year when hopefully we'll get full access. With so much closed off, maybe Historic Scotland should be charging a reduced rate?

End of September 2014 - charging full price entry to the castle whilst most of it is under repair is poor, there's as much to see outside the castle as inside right now. Worth a visit on a nice day, but be warned there's about 10 mins worth of interest inside right now.

went to see as its one of my family names. charging a fee for something that's not much to see besides the outside. Gentleman in the shop most helpful.

This is an impressive and huge castle ruin.A friendly staff member gave us information that made our visit more enjoyable.My grandchildren had a great time with the quiz sheet.A wedding party was in progress that added a special touch to our visit.Take a bit of time and absorb the history of this great ruin.

I was here on a very hot day. I had a great time Its free but, If you want to go and walk in side the castle let me let you its cost 4.50 and its not worth it. Just go and walk around the castle its self and take some photos like I did. There also a river there go down and see for your self. I spend in all 40 mins. There no shops there bring your own foods and drinks.

Stunning red sandstone pile with an ancient and important history. Scaffolding, as seems to be Historic Scotland's trademark much in evidence on the closed main tower but enough remaining to afford a glimpse if it's former magnificence. Extremely photogenic and on a summer day looked grand. Nice wooded location and ample parking.

This historic castle is tucked away in Lanarkshire and many people are probably unaware of it's existence.It is a great place to visit yourself or with the kids or grand kids.There are often events taking place at the castle so it's worth checking with Historic Scotland to see when these are on.

This castle was interesting in itself, but the host provided a most detailed and interesting history that helped bring it to life. The castle is along the Clyde, and built of red sandstone (direct from the river bank). It's history is one of the more interesting of the castles we toured, being very central to the Scottish Wars for Independence.

Unaltered, not reconstructed-a real piece of Scotland's history. Appreciate it while it lasts! There is a long and descriptive history of this castle. It is a privilege to be able to visit and experience a sense of it's story so many years after it unfolded. There is a small fee to visit, which is certainly a reasonable donation to help maintain the grounds of an ancient structure. Those of us with Scottish ancestry should take the time to learn of the significance of this castle in Scotland's history and be thrilled we can visit, walk amongst the remaining ruins without roped off pathways. We can climb up stone steps, gaze at the River Clyde through open "windows". It is as it ever was-after hundreds of years of natural and warring related aging. And no huge crowds-YOU can truly experience being here. No hurries, no crowds pushing you along. It is just so REAL!

This is billed as Scotland's largest and finest example of a 13th century castle by some. It is worth visiting however Historic Scotland could do more to preserve what is there and restore some back to its former glory to give visitors a sense of what this castle looked like in its day.
