Awesome trails, hills for challenge and beautiful scenery! Visit Ludy's in nearby Kickapoo for super tasty post ride burgers and brew!
Came to the area to attend a geocaching event -- this park is well-maintained, and has a PLETHORA of geocaches to find (both park and grabs and hikes). In addition, there is a historical site here that we didn't get to visit due to the State of Illinois' shortened hours for some historical sites. We will return to visit both again.
Three campgrounds are nestled among a larger wilderness area that is home to bike, hiking and horseriding trails. We did not use those so cannot comment on the quality of same, but did overnight at the campground and would like to offer travelers some information about that.Of the three distinct campground areas, located one after another on the same internal road, only one had showers so we chose that area without considering the others. Very few of the sites were level and most rigs will require a block or two under at least one wheel if you have a refrigerator you have to keep happy. Each site has a picnic table, and some have fire rings. The showers were kind of sad. Plenty of water and privacy, but the building's a bit old and dark and you don't want to stay in there any longer than you have to. Still and all, the fee was quite reasonable and the location is good--very accessible from the Interstate, no more than about a ten minute drive, but quiet and well away from any highway noise. The campgrounds hosts were quite friendly and helpful.
We arrived here for a 30 mile trail run this past weekend. The area is lovely. It is mostly single track trails that are multi-use. Bikes are allowed and also horses so be careful if you run out there. There are plenty of flat, run-able sections but plenty of rolling hills to make it a challenge.
