Site of the nation's oldest continual cheese making operation. It is about 10 miles from Okemo-Ludlow, VT. Very nice original building. Excellent Vermont cheeses here in a number of different cheddar varieties. People were very friendly here, a real pleasure to stop and talk a while. Not a large place but very Vermont, with great cheeses.

As designated historical cheese maker we were expecting a little more of the "history". Instead there is a small shop with a couple of old cheese making implements with almost no interpretive information. The cheese is average. As a lover of good very old cheddar we were expecting more flavour and bite in the "extra sharp". All cheese was available only in wrapped packages, like major commercial cheese makers.

I remember going to the Crowley cheese factory when I was a child....more than a few years ago. We are about 90 minutes away from Mt Holly and it is such a beautiful area we love going there and alway go to the cheese factory. The country side in Vermont is so lovely and I love the anticipation of seeing the beautiful old historic building and sampling the wonderful Colby cheese at Crowley. It is not cheddar...we were told that cheddar is a process and Colby is made differently in a very old fashioned way. at the oldest running cheese factory in the country. I love all there cheese, but especially the extra sharp and some actually aged up to 5 years. We New Englanders call it 'rat cheese'. Not sure if we ever saw it being made but would rather sample and buy it. Love to get the pieces which are less in price and all are vacuumed sealed. They also have samples and sales of local mustards, jams etc. Don't expect a massive place and big production. Savor the ambience, it's not Kraft.(thank heavens)

Tasty samples of cheese, but no cheese making happening on Columbus Day weekend. We did buy a delicious cheese and honey mustard with ale.

We watched the show "Dirty Jobs" when Mike Rowe was visiting Crowley Cheese. Since we were planning a trip to Vermont, and thought it would be fun to go where the show was filmed, I noted this on my list of possible things to do. We also enjoy visiting farm stores when we travel and we were not disappointed with this stop. It is much smaller than we expected, but was big on entertainment, information and great cheese. There is a selection of samples of each of the flavors they make as well as the crackers and jellies they sell. The gift shop area contains items for purchase from some of the local small business owners. Crowley cheese makes a unique cheese unlike any of the others made in Vermont. This is a must do if in the area and an added plus is the drive out is absolutely breathtaking.

I have a barber shop in Rutland. I had a customer come in who told me was from Wisconsin. I stated that Vermont produced superior cheese. I mentioned a well known mass produced brand. The conversation got a bit heated, then a couple of old timers said that Crowley cheese is the best. My wife and I took a short drive to Mount Holly and were not disappointed. The Uncommonly Sharp is definitely a superior product! We picked up a couple pounds and my wife made an excellent macaroni and cheese. We also got some hot pepper cheese for snacking. Between the friendly staff and the great tasting samples you will definitely buy something at this place.

We happened by this place while going hiking, and just stopped in. It was not very big...maybe the first floor of a large house. There was no cheesemaking going on at the time (but it was sunday). However, cheese was excellent. We bought several types--we bought a mesquite flavor that was so tasty! Tip--they will let you buy the ends of the cheese rounds that are not square for a cheaper price!

This is a small one room cheese factory. On my last visit the three employees were gathering cheese curd - the first time in 4 or 5 visits that I actually witnessed the process. It is worth a stop to sample their nice cheeses (fresh chive is my favorite) but don't be assured you'll see them making cheese. They have samples of all their cheeses and gourmet crackers to go with them. You can also sample some of their locally sourced jams, pickles, etc. Their prices are lower than the grocery store. If planning a stop be aware that they do not have a public restroom!

Quaint shop with excellent cheese. Plenty of samples and you can get off priced cheese - i.e. the end pieces that don't fit the shape of a bar, etc.

We stopped here after finding a brochure about Crowley Cheese at a visitor's center. There wasn't any cheese being made that day so nothing much to see, but they did have samples you could try. There was also a staff member who could answer any questions we may have had. It was a quick stop for us, but worth the detour.

The people are friendly and the cheese is delicious! Not only did they have samples of the cheese, they had jams and spreads galore. So delicious! They weren't making cheese when we went but that's ok, we had a great experience anyways :)

I love cheese, but there's really not much excitement to be had from watching people make it - its basically watching milk curdle, so I wasn't too fussed about the fairly limited viewing opportunities here - its a small operation. However, the staff making the cheese were very friendly and would continually pop their head out to answer any questions.Tasting cheese - thats another matter. All their varieties were available for tasting, as well as their great range of locally produced condiments. My heart was truly stolen by the unusually sharp cheddar, wow! That's how I remember cheddar was supposed to taste from when I was a kid. Unfortunately my heart was broken a few days later when I left the cheese in somebody else's fridge during a pit stop on the way home. Luckily I think Crowley do shipping!

I knew timing might be an issue when we decided to visit and the comments about sampling the cheese made the decision for us. We didn't see cheese being made but a staff member explained the process for us. The store offers a variety of Vermont products. We tasted several kinds of chedder cheese, made our purchases and left.

Nice place to make a side stop. Cheese is really good and reasonably priced. It was fun to watch them making cheese.
