On a recent Saturday, I'd spent about five hours driving to and from a casino down in San Diego County, and my girlfriend decided to use some of her winnings to treat us to massages after we got back that evening. She found Carnival Foot Spa using Yelp and got us an appointment for 5:30.I'd had several massage experiences before, the major ones having been at a Mandara Spa and a Burke Williams. But I'd never had a "foot message" before. It turned out to be a much nicer experience than I expected, and as my girlfriend had promised, it didn't involve anyone messing with my feet. After we arrived, we were led through a room filled with low cots where massages are performed communally to a private room containing two normal massage tables. I think they just assumed that we are a couple and wouldn't mind being in the same room together. Otherwise, we could have said something and asked that one of us receive our massage in the other private room next door, which has only one massage table. My girlfriend got a 45-minute body massage and a 15-minute foot massage with Coco for $30, and I got an hour body massage with Tina for $40.Tina started out slowly, massaging me through the towel that covered me, but then moved it and used a lotion on my skin. I'm not sure if it was massage oil, since she later cleaned it up very easily with a warm towel. She spent most of the time on my back, and seemed to do some of what's called a "deep tissue" massage at spas, but also massaged my shoulders and legs, and then worked on my arms after she had me turn over. No, the experience at Carnival Foot Spa wasn't like that at Burke Williams. You don't spend half a day here, but are in an out in a little over an hour. There's no quiet room with fresh fruit and tea, no sauna or pool, nowhere to shower and clean up after your massage. They did play soft music and it was relatively quiet, but there was almost no interactive with the masseuse other than a few instructions. Then again, I didn't attempt to engage in conversation but remained silent and enjoyed my massage. Tina and Coco did whisper to each other in Chinese, which didn't bother me, and I don't know if they were talking about the work they were doing or chit-chatting about their personal lives.I can see splurging on several hours at a Burke Williams or similar spa every now and then, but when all you want is a great massage without spending the time or money to visit a spa, a trip to Carnival Foot Spa does the job very nicely.
