This is a beautiful location and a beautiful cemetery. It was designed by archetect Olmstead (I believe), who designed Central Park. It 100+ years old and has graves of many historical California people, including the Crocker family (Well Fargo Bank), Ghiridelli (chocoloate), architect Julia Morgan. The miles of roads are great for walking, although hilly, but the view from the top is wonderful. Locals walk there all the time and dogs are allowed on a leash. There are seasonal displays of flowers (tulips in Spring). During Christmas time there are lights and beautiful floral displays. It is also on Piedmont Avenue (the "dead end") and is walking distance from the eateries and shops on the avenue.

This cemetery provides guided walks on Saturday but on weekdays affords long walks of interest. Dog friendly and a wealth of historical graves giving a very interesting stroll.

Leash only but very dog friendly, the miles of paved roads make this a great place to walk your dog, or just take a walk. It may sound odd to go often to a cemetery where you don't personally know anyone buried, but this one is a treasure for everyone. Many historically significant and famous people. Beautifully maintained, flower displays and lovely trees and fountains. We park neat the gate and hike counterclockwise to the very top where the views of San Francisco, the bridges and Mt Tam are spectacular. Rain or shine a great walking place! The visitors center / office has a complimentary map which shows significant graves. Very interesting. (Please pick up after your dog, and dispose - many garbage cans available)

Enter this retreat at the end of Piedmont Ave after the buzz of the busy shopping street and you're in an urban oasis! Park along the tree lined streets and meander up paths into sanctuaries of peace and tranquility in the company of East Bay luminaries such as Julia Morgan, the Crocker clan, Ghirardelli family and Civil War veterans. Keep walking up the hill and you are treated to incredible views of the entire Bay Area!

Frankly, I'd rather get there later rather than sooner but if you're interested in a time capsule of famous Californians many of them are interred in this beautiful cemetery. In my youth we used to fish in the lakes there. As an adolescent I drove my go-cart on the narrow winding roads that criss-cross the entire place. (The resident security guard used to chase in his 1953 Plymouth but he was never able to catch us.)As an adult I've attended many Veterans Day ceremonies and similar functions.Unfortunately, I was there last month to bury my oldest childhood friend. RIP, Bill.

You don't have to be morbid, or dead for that matter, to enjoy a cemetery. This one in particular has some quite lovely and innate crypts and monuments, and is a great place for a walk and introspection.

Don't know how old this cemetery is, but it is a comfortable and interesting place to walk. Lots of crypts and gravesites to visit, even if you don't know anyone here...

This cemetery has many beautiful, creative and ostentatious markers. There are some well known historical figures here. A great walk for people into art and history.

Mountain View Cemetery is a microcosm of Oakland where you will find gravesites for a myriad of ethnic and religious groups who have made Oakland their home. It is a beautiful park as well as the resting place for pioneers, famous and not so famous Californians. The beauty of Mountain view is that it is part of community where people come to wander with their children and dogs to appreciate the grounds and the history and the amazing monuments. Worth an expedition!

This is one of the "hidden gems" in the Bay Area, CA. Though not exactly a tourist attraction, it is serene and old enough to have the most interesting memorials. The best part however, is the spectacular views of the Bay and surrounding area.

We have never been to a cemetery like this in all of the places we have been. I can't think of a better place in which to be buried. First of all, it is a huge piece of property; secondly, it has the best views of the city and third, it is quiet and serene. The road winds up and down a mountain and at every stop is a panorama of beauty. You must come here when you visit!

I know it is weird to say that we went to Mountain View Cemetery as party of our vacation, but we did, and it was STUNNING! We loved walking around and viewing the history that this place holds, along with some stunning memorials and some stunning views. Honestly a must-see while in the area ... take an hour and just go!

I'm giving 2 stars instead of 1 because this cemetery is really beautiful and I get together with other mothers to walk the grounds regularly. Unfortunately, yesterday, we were harassed by their staff, of course a male, who was offended with one of the mothers feeding her baby in public. She was even covered up, but his reasoning (yea right!!) was that if someone who lost their baby saw this, how would they feel??My question to him, then maybe a mother shouldn't take a bench to give a sandwich to a 2 year old or a grandmother, because what if someone came along and had lost one of them??!His response, "she should have some decorum!"Decorum sir!!?!Feeding your hungry child is not behavior in keeping with good taste, etiquette or decency!??!!!It was him who was not having decorum; to harass a protected class, which in California, breastfeeding mothers are a part of!So according to California Civil Code § 43-53. 1997 Section 43.3 of the Civil Code:43.3. Notwithstanding any other provision of law, a mother may breastfeed her child in any location, public or private, except the private home or residence of another, where the mother and the child are otherwise authorized to be present. So without having a designated breastfeeding area, this man telling this mother to move was illegal and him questioning her decency for doing so was insulting!!Mount View Cemetery, maybe your staff needs to be informed about the law, before any future insult of this type leads to legal injury for you!Mothers feeding your hungry babies in public, maybe we should keep the video recorders on our phones on when we do, so that next time we can send a viral message to educate men like this that get jealous over babies having access to the womanly parts that they covet!
