A beautiful little rural cemetary just south of Wahpeton. The circus monument is very cool. Make sure to wander around and look at the other old headstones in the graveyard.

I was in town for other business, so I jumped at the opportunity to visit and pay my respects. The rating takes into account that it is not a general-interest attraction, but if you are in town, it is well worth a visit, especially if you are a history or circus buff. The tripadvisor map location marker is currently a little misleading; the cemetery is located 1 mile south of the intersection of 11th Ave S. and Center St., located roughly between the river and the southeast corner of the airport. Just drive south on Center until you see a pair of brick pillars on the left, on either side of a dirt driveway. The monument in the middle of the cemetery. The cemetary is well-tended, taken care of by the local VFW and cemetery neighbors (thanks Greg!).In addition to the two Ringling Bros. circus workers, Charles Smith and Charles Walters, killed in 1897 by a thunderstorm while setting up the main tent (see the associated attraction website), there is a marker next to the monument for Herbert Joseph “Duke” Walker, a trumpet player for the Daily Brothers Circus, who died in 1948 of apparently natural causes while in Wahpeton.
