Your first stop should be the Visitor's Center in Fair Bluff. It has a wealth of information. And the people that staff it are very nice/helpful. They can tell you what to watch for, the current river condition, where the trail begins, etc. There are also bathrooms in the Visitor's Center. No charge for this activity but you can offer a donation to keep it going ........We, 20 of my friends and I, went to explore the town of Fair Bluff (NC) + the beautiful Lumber River Walk the last day of February, 2015. It was cool when we started out but the weather warmed up later into the day. We were on a raised boardwalk since the water level was higher than normal (see my pictures). This wasn't bad but prevented us from going more than a few miles. We ran into an area where the high water made continuing impassable. However, the air was cool and we were told to be very careful if we returned in the summer since the area is heavily forested and there can be snakes in the summer. A great reason to go for a visit while it is still ... cool !In fairness, there are a number of places where you can go down a few stairs, onto the forest floor. We could not do that this time since two of the bottom-most stairs were under water. The raised boardwalk has a number of places to enjoy the beautiful view(s). There are also benches along the way, if you'd like to rest. The walk is all on one level so climbing/elevation is not an issue. There are also picnic tables, some in the open, some under a roof, so it could be a great (shady) place to picnic in the summer. Everything you see will be a beautiful/natural setting.Don't forget to bring your camera ........
