national aviary

Went for first time with my wife and 14 month old son. Great time for all. Very family friendly setup. Almost all of the exhibits are open with walkways down the center, and plenty big enough to handle the crowds.Colored pictures posted around the exhibit allow for fun times trying to spot all the birds in each room. Everything (currently) is indoors, so no problem with inclement weather. Limited parking lot for $5.

I loved the variety of bird life here! Parking price wsw stupid, but right out front there are meters. $1 for an hour! Definitely look into that. :)

This is a lovely place to spend a few hours on a chilly afternoon, even if you're not a "bird" person in particular. As others have stated, it is a bit pricey, but I'm sure it costs a lot to take care of so many animals. The staff and volunteers were all well-informed and friendly and the facility is very attractive. My favorite part of all was the "Grasslands" room. There's a place to sit while you listen to quiet music, accompanied by the cheeps and chirps of the loveliest little birds. I could sit in there for an hour!There are two other areas you can walk through, where you are surrounded by birds that are free to roam. Sometimes they fly alarming close to your face. Be advised: you CAN get pooped-on. It didn't happen to us, but it does happen. I think that getting a chance to walk among the birds is worth the risk though.It was very crowded when we were there on a Saturday. I'm sure it's much more sedate during the week. We didn't go to any of the shows but we will next time. As for parking: if you park in their lot it's 5 bucks. If you can find street parking in front it's a dollar per hour so unless you're planning to stay 5 hours you can save a little.

Make sure that you time your visit around the shows. The place is small so unless you're seeing a show it's not really more than an hour to an hour and a half. The penguin exhibit is really fun and the place is laid out really nice. They also have some really knowledgeable volunteers working and they're very friendly and informative.

We enjoyed interacting with the birds. Penguins were so cute and they all had name bands! I personally enjoyed the rainforest area as the birds moved freely and oftentimes joined us on the walkway. Good for a short afternoon visit.

Wonderful attraction to visit. Close up view of birds. Penguin display is awesome. Don't forget to bring your camera. A little disappointed that the price keeps going up, however active military persons get free admission. Get place to visit when in Pittsburgh.

The Pittsburgh Aviary used to be one of the best kept secrets in the city. Amazing exhibits and closeness with the birds. The only issue now is that the price of admission has steadily gone up. Took my 3 grandchildren last year while they were in town. I was shocked when the cashier told me how much! and it was with a coupon!

I go to the aviary once or twice a month. Its always a very relaxing experience and all the workers are extremely friendly and knowledgeable. A few things to consider when planning a visit:1.) If you can, go on a weekday. The weekends get very crowded and the aviary seems to lose it's peacefulness.2.) Park in there small marking lot. It is a short walk to the main entrance and any/all strret parking is tough to come by in that area. 3.) Feed the Lorikeets. Just do it.

The people are so friendly and knowledgeable about the birds. There are opportunities to feed the birds also. My grandchildren love feeding the Lories. I have a membership and go often.

I've never visited the Aviary in Pittsburgh until recently. For years I've been wanting to go so one afternoon we decided to go and see what it's about and fulfill my mission to see as many attractions in the Pittsburgh area as possible! This place is great! It has so many birds and it really lets you see the true colors and sizes of the all types of birds especially the bald eagle and sea hawk! I'd definitely recommend this place to all! We loved it and may go back in the summer to see the condors!

The aviary is a great way to spend a few hours. The shows are interesting, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable, and most of it is interactive. Most of the birds are free to move about the rooms as they please, allowing for much better viewing than a traditional setup. The only downside to the aviary is the admission price, which seems just a bit too high.

This was a repeat visit for us, and they have definitely done some remodeling and upgrades since our last visit a few years ago! Looks like they're doing a few more- exciting! The exhibits are great, the way that they are laid out. you can wander through at your own pace, and spend as long or as little as you like in each one. Ther are seats so that you can sit and take it all in and just watch the multitude of different species flying around. Ther are many different interactive events, where you get to watch the birds being fed, or even feed the birds yourself. The penguins, of course, are adorable! Even the bats (surprised myself) I found to be cute. Could stand and admire the bald eagle for hours - so majestic. and so up close! The employees in each exhibit are more than willing to answer your questions, and are extremely knowledgeable. I've yet to be able to stump them. They seem to really love what they do, which makes it a pleasure to talk with them. My only wish is for a larger parking lot. That is a challenge on a busy day.

If you enjoy bird watching then this is the place to be. They offer an astounding variety of birds and water fowl. Some are really beautiful while others are just plain silly looking. They offer a bird show for an additional fee that is usually quite entertaining. This is a fantastic place to visit year round. The cost is pretty reasonable too and parking is free in their onsite lot.

Excellent place to take children. Offers educational shows which are very interactive for kids. My nephew and daughter absolutely love it when we go there for the day! They always get to feed the birds!
