If this store were in a big city, it wouldn't rate highly. But out here in Big Bend country, we were delighted to finally get to a town big enough to have a grocery store. They had staples, and that's more than I can say of the sorry little stores we had experienced in smaller towns. The produce department existed, and that's the good news. The produce itself was pretty hit or miss. We couldn't find any decent tomatoes so we changed plans and bought green tomatoes, made a different kind of salsa that worked great. If you're a fan of Mexican glass votive candles, this is the BEST collection I've ever seen. I took lots of photos but -- alas -- the candles were too heavy for my luggage.

Grocery Stores in the Big Bend area of Texas are so few and far between. Porter's Thriftway Grocery in Alpine is a fully stocked store with even a large Wine Department and a specialty Beer Department. This is the place to stock up as you travel the Big Bend area.
