Columbus, Texas is the oldest platted town in Texas, established in 1823. It is well known for its charm, historic homes and buildings, and its plethora of large Live Oak trees which can be found all over town. The first District Court in Texas was actually convened in Columbus under the (now dead) "Court Oak" tree adjacent to the Colorado County Courthouse where a historic marker is present. This extra large tree is actually right across the street from the post office, so if you wish to find it, just ask anyone where the post office is and you will. It is a good photo op and quite impressive...

Impressive tree worth admiring when you find it. On a main road, but not well advertised, which is a pity. Unlike the Large Oak tree in Sherwood Forest Nottingham, England, which is always a great attraction, and is very well known.

Over the years it's one of those side trips you should do, nice history that has stood the test of time. Good photo opSo make the effort & maybe more than what you expect.

There are many beautiful old oak trees in Columbus. This particular oak is quite beautiful but the stop is awkward because it's on a main road and too close too other houses to not feel like you're walking into someone's yard. I would suggest stopping long enough to admire it but then drive around the historical district to enjoy the other trees and wonderful old homes. Columbus has an unusually large number of well kept older homes. Then park by St. John's Episcopal Church (Preston St.) and get out to enjoy the large oak on their spacious lot. With limbs extending to the ground this is a favorite with children and for others taking formal portraits. There's even a bench and a couple of picnic tables. The church is not staffed during the week but happy for people to enjoy their grounds.

Not just any oak and there are sure some very great looking oak trees in this area of Texas! You can get close to this tree to see the many years of growth along its girth and height. There are major poles helping the long branches keep their form. That does not take way from its size or longevity. There is parking for about two or three vehicles/small. If you are passing by on Highway 90, this is worth a stop. PS a wide angle lens is necessary.
