The kids will really enjoy this, they can safely scamper off, ahead of their parents' and see the river, woodland and indian Teepee campground. The board walk is safe and railed- in, if you are lucky, you may see a moose, lots of birds and squirrels, chipmunks and deer.

I visited the Discovery Center with my 13 yo grandson. While I believe the displays in the exhibit hall could use a bit more pizazz, the good news is it is all free. The place is a little off the beaten track, but worth the trip. There are some neat lashed wood structures outside. Inside the main building there are some not-so-engaging nature displays. There is a touch tank where young adventurers can handle clams, snails, sea urchins, etc. To me the tank was pretty empty.Funny, for anyone who lives anywhere near the seacoast and goes to the beach, these same creatures are there to be seen in the wild. For the wheelchair bound there is a winding trail to take you to the main trail, for others there are stairs. At the beginning of the trail there are two "landlocked" boats, a replica of a small fishing boat and a gundalow. Suggestion to the administration: A bell to ring or a ship's wheel to turn would be a neat addition. Kids (like me too!) can go inside them and imagine being on the rolling sea. Most of the main trail is a boardwalk that takes you through a forest, a swamp and a field of reeds to a wonderful view of Great Bay. There is a bench there so you can linger and enjoy it. The trail is about 1/2 mile long and may take 45 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace. I noticed some numbers on posts at various locations but unfortunately did not have (and could not find) a guide sheet to explain their significance. Be aware in mid-July to early August there may be some stray green head flies or horseflies. If we go back it will be later in September. At that time we will likely take advantage of their convenient canoe and kayak put-in spot, if I can find the access driveway.

Interesting and educational for all ages. Wasn't crowded so we didn't feel rushed. Enjoyed walking the trails and seeing the estuary environment up close.
