It was great to walk around seeing all of the different buildings and learning of the history about Deleware and our country.

We watched the 4th of July parade which was delightful. It was patriotic and a good family event. We were, however, dismayed that very, very few people stood when the honor guard went by with our American Flag. My husband and I stood as well as two young men. We need to respect our flag and what it stands for and remember the many young men and women that have fought for our freedom.

We got there in the afternoon.Spent about 1 hour 1/2 here.We started at the Archive building - visitor center. There was an exibit about the underground railroad in DE... educating. We first tour the State Capitol which is a nice building from the outside and also from the Inside where it differs from other state capitols you may have visited. It would have been nice to get a brochure about the history of the building and the DE legislature when entering the building instead of walking around doing a self guided tour without any information but what we could see. Then we went to the old State House. We met a volunteer overthere who was very knowledgeable about DE history and we had a great time listening to him and learning fun and interesting facts about Delaware. We then walk a little outside, around the green, looking at the beautiful buildings that surround the whole historic area.It was winter so we would like to come back during the fall to appreciate more the outside of Heritage park.We were happy to have stop here during our vacation.

We are so sorry that you missed all our Park has to offer. Yes, we are a little non-traditional as far as parks go. No, we do not have miles of trails and acres of forest; but we do have a lot going on in the city of Dover. The best place to start is at the First State Heritage Park Welcome Center and Galleries. There they can direct you to all of our other sites using our handy program guide and map. The galleries feature rotating exhibits. Currently, we are featuring the statues and sculptures of Charles Parks, a Delaware artist. Soon, we will be featuring the Underground Railroad in Delaware. This building is also home to the Delaware Public Archives, open for researchers to search through the state's repository.Once you leave from the Welcome Center, you can get a tour of both our current capitol - Legislative Hall, and our former capitol-The Old State House. Around the other side of Legislative Hall is a large green space, called Legislative Mall, which is great for eating lunch or spending some time outside. If you keep heading in that direction, you will run into The Green, the "town square" or historic center of Dover. This has just recently been added to the First State National Monument (nps.gov/frst) with a passport stamp located in The Old State House. Also on The Green is the John Bell House, the oldest wooden structure on The Green where walking tours of the historic district are offered. If it is monuments and statues you are after, we have some of those as well. In addition to the monument of the Delaware Regiment in front of Legislative Hall, at the foot of Legislative Mall is a replica of the Liberty Bell, given to each state for the Bicentennial. On The Green, there is a large stone marker commemorating the Delaware Regiment as they left on their "Immortal Southern Campaign" during the American Revolution. Also, Constitution Park celebrates Delaware becoming the "First State" by being the first state to ratify the federal Constitution on December 7, 1787.Our park also includes several museums, including the Johnson Victrola Museum, featuring Dover's native son, Eldridge Reeves Johnson and an incredible collection of phonographs and recordings from the founder of the Victor Talking Machine Company. Be sure to check out the newly renovated Biggs Museum of American Art with a wonderful collection of American decorative arts. And that is just during the day! There's lots to do in historic Delaware. We took a couple of walking tours. -- one on Divided Delaware during the civil war and another on slavery. Both were excellent given by enthusiastic knowledgeable guides. The legislative house tour is informative as well. Very walkable pretty area.

We take a walk around checking all the state buildings. The buildings are very well preserved and they are really beautiful. But they also look empty/not occupied. During our Sunday morning visit everything was closed which was a kind of disillusion. This area has lots of potential. they should develop it more for tourism.

Definitely a good way to spend your day in Dover! Take in the historical sights on State Street and The Green, and be sure to stop over at Legislative Hall for a tour there as well.

Don't miss this assembly of museums in the heart of the state capital. Extremely well done

After visiting the old State House, we were advised to go on a walking tour from the nearby John Bell House. The tour lasted about 45 minutes and delved into the history of the various people who helped shape this historical area of Dover. I was especially interested in learning the history of the man on Delaware's state quarter; Caeser Rodney. I had no idea of his significance before the tour. The stories were all fascinating and I would love to come back for some of their night walk tours. I hope this is the kind of program the state continues to fund as it seems very worthwhile!
