A fascinating historic early American house museum. But I especially love the fact that the museum keeps the spirit of philosophical inquiry established by its colonial resident, Bishop Berkeley alive through its program of resident philosophers.

It seems that on every trip, you come across one outstanding historically significant marvelous hidden gem, and Whitehall Museum House was that for me. We enjoy our free time by visiting and learning about historical residences and those people who had left their mark on history. Whitehall house and Bishop George Berkeley were just what we were hoping to find in Rhode Island. We met Professor Robert Tully and his charming wife Ann when we visited on July 03, 2014. Professor Tully was warm and inviting and we really enjoyed our tour of Whitehall and the history behind the house and its most famous resident, Bishop George Berkeley. We were very impressed by the breadth of knowledge that Professor Tully had shared with us. Kudos to the Colonial Dames of Rhode Island for the meticulous and time consuming work put in to maintain this wonderful property. We have been to properties outside of Rhode Island maintained by The Colonial Dames of America and each shows this lovely attention to detail and history. We could not have hoped for more. Whitehall Museum House is a must see for anyone visiting Rhode Island who loves history and architecture. I would heartily recommend a little research on the Whitehall Museum House Website (via Google) and a visit ..... We will definitely be back and have now started looking into allocating time just to see Colonial Dames of America properties in the Northeast US.

This is one of Newport Rhode Islands hidden gems in full view.Located on Newports busy tourist street, Thames, this gift of American History and Heritage preserved by Doris Duke and the Newport Restoration allows you to walk back in time and see items of magnificent cabinet makers skills who lived side by side of the founding fathers of our country.

I enjoy photographing historical buildings and this was very convenient, as well as having the connection with the English philosopher Bishop Berkeley. The museum inside was closed for the season but a lady connected with the site happened to be stopping by and was kind enough to give me a tour. The tour is definitely worth it for learning about how this famous man and his contemporaries lived.
