Great food places all around, fantastic independent book store and ice cream shop all across the street from each other

No visit to Charleston is complete without a walk down capital street at night. Great places to eat, from Black Bean Burrito to Pies and Pints to the Adelphia Sports Bar. When you want desert got to Ellen's Ice Cream...and if you want coffee and maybe a little music stop by Taylor Books!

Somehow it is difficult to review a street that was the social center of my teen age years and it's now a contrived urban space. Like many cities whose character has been destroyed by suburbanization, highways, or economic decline, Charleston struggles to save what was once a modest, but lively downtown. The buildings are fine, but unfortunately the tenants--a sports bar, lawyer's offices, an ice cream store, do not create a viable urban experience. Yes, indeed, the street of the 60's is gone. The ghosts of the Diamond, Stone and Thomas, Frankenberger's, the Daniel Boone Hotel preside over planned activities like an art fair with the usual wares, children's games, a river front "landing" without boats... Sad, really.

Very pretty street that is well lighted at night. Beautifully maintained / restored older buildings. Ate excellent pizza at Pies and Pints and then my daughter got ice cream at a shop across the street. We were first time visitors to Charleston from a much larger city and were impressed. It gave us a great impression of the city. Residents should be proud.

CAPARONIS

A sports bar where grape leaves and fried feta cheese are on the appetizer list as well as Greek wings! Or go next door for pizza and more beer choices than you can imagine. If sweet is your thing cross the street for homemade ice cream. A neat little area in downtown Charleston.

So much to see/do here. You can envision a busy Charleston, WV of the 1950's-60's. You don't want to miss this stroll down memory lane to a better time/place:)

If you are already visiting Charleston then this is a neat place to stop by and check out. However, I would make a special trip to Charleston to see this. It does have a nice charm and lots of shops.

The drive along the stree and the highway on the other side of the river provide lovely views of the town and river.

Capitol St. is like no other, lined with beautiful, well kept, older buildings full of shops and restaurants...I loved the tree lined street as well. Very charming!

It was a great environment and the shops are very diverse. The bookstore and pies and pints were great.

Capitol Street , The old buildings, the beautiful tree lined street is like looking at a post card. This was like a walk down memory lane remembering the old stores and in what building they were in. It was good to be back home again !

Capital Street used to be the place to shop until the Charleston Town Center was built in the 1980's. Now it is mostly small food establishments and business offices. The buildings have been revitalized and are well maintained.

In all my travels to the far corners of the world that have spanned a few decades, nothing ever tops the experiences of strolling up one side and down the other of our very own Capital Street, the "Main Street" of our fair city! Enjoy it for all that it is, which, indeed, is much!

If you want good eats just stroll down Capitol Street. I REALLY enjoyed Pies and Pints and always stop for ice cream at Ellens
