Little Tom is a 73 acre Trustees property on the eastern slope of Mt Tom in Holyoke. It is a pretty forested area with an out-and-back trail, the Woodland Trail, and a vernal pool/pond. Although it doesn’t have a view, the trail provides a small climb. There is no direct road access to Little Tom. Visitors enter the Mt Tom State Reservation and park at the Bray Lake parking area. Take the Bray Loop Trail (either branch) and then the Knox Trail to Little Tom. The I-91 Cutoff Trail (unmarked) provides a good view of the Connecticut River and eastern farmlands while standing under a billboard. The Knox Trail has a short but steep and potentially slippery section. Just take your time and watch your footing. Little Tom doesn’t have the standard TTOR signage, just a standard state (white) sign announcing the Woodland Trail. The trail isn’t blazed for about the first 100 feet, but becomes very well blazed with yellow circles after passing under the power line that feeds the I-91 Cutoff billboard. The trail is also bordered by dead wood and stones in spots. There are a few switchbacks, but nothing dramatic. The Woodland Trail is generally a pleasant and enjoyable trail.Distance from the car to the Woodland trail is about 1.5 miles. The Woodland Trail is about a mile in length. Total round trip mileage is about 5 miles. It’s a lovely reservation. Allocate the proper time and you will enjoy its serenity and foliage.
