We went here while on our cruise with NCL Jewel. You are tendered from cruise ship to the island. The island is very small, you have maybe about 2 football fields of beach, if you want to call it that. its more a shell sand mixture so bring shoes. the beach extends out about 6 feet into the water than if become a muddy pond like bottom. The place got crowed quick with limited chairs. The lounge chairs are solid wood very uncomfortable. The smell from the bathrooms was awful especially when the wind blew, Not really sure where they were draining the toilets too? They have a bar in the middle but limited help only had 2 people working for all the people that were there. They don't really serve any Caribbean food just more American type food hamburgers and hot dogs. The bar has a nice selection of drinks just takes awhile to get one. If you want to leave and go back to the cruise ship NOT going to happen your stuck there until it your boats time to come pick you up. The island it self looks beautiful, but really after about 30 minutes really nothing to do. Would not do this again.
First, this Island, formerly Bannister Island, is now under new ownership and management. You can tour here from Cruise Ships and from land. Tours from cruise ships range around 80.00 US. You can get this same tour on land for about half of the price if you know what to ask for. So, ask for snorkeling and a trip to Starfish Island, formerly Bannister Island. You might even see several tour packages that take you here...for instance, an entry level snorkel package for children at Starfish Island or a deal where you have lunch on the Island. The Island is beautiful. The owner, Amil, sorry if I have misspelled it, is invested in doing things well. The tours on his boats snorkeling at the reefs are very well done. People are taken out in groups based on their experience.Water, not bottled, rum punch, Sprite and Coke are all free on the boat, not on the island. Beware of the delicious punch. It is quite powerful and good but after snorkeling you need hydration. Two of these were waaaay to many for me. Bring along bottled water. Diet soda not available. The food looked delicious, grilled fish and rice. There is a chance to rent kayaks for 15.00 for 45 minutes and the water is calm and you can paddle around the island. He is also going to add water features such as slides, etc.I could have stayed all day! Nice wood lounge chairs and limited but lovely hammocks. There are covered areas and shaded areas. You can easily pick up huge starfish and conch shells.
We arrived on a Royal Caribbean cruise line, and took a tender to Starfish Island. The weather was AMAZING and the water was GORGEOUS! The island was clean and picture perfect! We had a blast laying on the beach, looking at starfish, collecting shells, and listening to music. The authentic food was DELIC and the drinks were great too. The owner of the bar even apologized for the wait, because the were PACKED! They staff even came up to our chairs and took our drink orders! Would go back in a heartbeat, and wished we could have stayed longer!
Cruise to the Caribbean...Been there done that type of attitude....We were traveling with first time visitors to Belize that wanted to snorkel. RCCL offered a snorkel trip that had a visit to Starfish Island afterwards. Boy, what a pleasant surprise! I found myself having a grand time both on the snorkeling trip and once we got to the island. The service on board the boat and on the island was impeccable! Very courteous and attentive snorkel/tour guides. Divided us up on three different levels of expertise so that everybody was comfortable and able to make the best of the trip.Once on the island, the restaurant/bar serves delicious meals, very cold beers and tropical drinks! Beautiful sandy beach with ultra clear water (at least on the day I went!) Don't think about it, Do It !
We went snorkeling first and then went to the island. We were only there for an hour and I was glad. There was a beach but it wasn't the best i've seen. Better then nothing I guess. Snorkeling part of the tour was better but crowded. Should have done a full day snorkeling I guess.
Yes, there are starfish - plenty of them. A recent change in management is evident. The very pleasant and well trained attentive staff will make your visit enjoyable. Spend the day relaxing on a hammock or chaise and enjoy the view while you await delivery of your favorite beverage. It's a private island with many of the amenities of a resort. Accidents do happen - I witnessed the first aid team move quickly to stabilize and transport an over zealous volleyball playing baby-boomer.
I recently picked this trip as part of the Celebrity Equinox shore excursion pick list. It was the worst shore excursion I have ever been on and I have been on many including 3rd world countries which I have always loved. Firstly we were jammed into a boat which was overcrowded to get there - most people had to sit nose to nose with no outside view or air - goodness knows what would have happened if it had capsized. Fortunately we got an outside spot on the way out (about 6 were available) but on the return not so lucky - 20 minutes of total claustrophobia By the time we arrived on what could only be described as some man made looking strip of land (we were delayed) there was nowhere to sit as many other boats had by then converged - we found out later some trips had been cancelled to other places and it was massively over subscribed. It was an absolute scrum to get a sun bed and existing people were gifting beds to whoever they chose - regardless of whether they were first in line and regardless of the fact they did not have any right to do this - it really brought out the worst in people. Needless to say we did not sprint fast enough and had to make do with a plastic chair. Some people didn't even manage a plastic seat. A very corny Elvis singer was singing in the background which just jarred the nerves even more -he was no Elvis Presley and I like Elvis Presley. Many people wanted to return to the Equinox but were unable to - there was a queue of people who complained to the Equinox on the return about the quality of this trip. The food was ok - we never have high expectations there and we were already on an up market all inclusive cruise so this was not a big deal.. We didn't have a drink as we refused to throw bad money after good. We went on a catamaran trip the following day which was amazing. I am not in the habit of complaining but I asked for a full refund which I got. It did not make up for a dreadful experience if I am honest. I am not sure where these great reviews are coming from or why - these folks have either nothing to compare this with or I just don't know - I'm puzzled! Please take my advice and don't go. NB I understand the cave tubing was awesome if your are looking for an alternative.
We went here on an excursion from a cruise. This hands down was one of the most beautiful places we have ever been. We can understand why they have changed the name to starfish island because it was full of the largest most beautiful starfish we've ever seen. It was so relaxing and fun to just chill out. The beautiful thatched roofs were like from a post card. We picked up some awesome shells. We had a great meal and some fun shopping at some small shops on the island. The bathrooms were pristine and so was the beach. Some of the most beautiful water we have ever seen. This is one place we will return and are so glad we chose this as a last minute excursion. Also my husband ordered a pina colada at the local bar and the bartender actually climbed the tree and chopped the coconut and made his drink with it and served it in it. That was so awesome to watch.
We went on a cruise and did this shore excursion through Carnival as we hadn't had any plans for the day. I'm so glad we did! This island used to be called Bannister's Island and as I understand it, it is now owned by Carnival and is called Starfish Island. To get to this island, you take a 20 minute ferry ride. We were greeted by "Whitey" the island dog. We went on a day that there was only one cruise ship in port. There were approximately 50 of us and we had the entire island to ourself! It is a very beautiful and very small island. I can't imagine though if there were several cruise boats in port and you had to share this island. The employees there say that it gets crowded. There was lots of gorgeous sand, the water was perfect and there were lots of hammocks and tables and chairs to relax in. Bathrooms were clean. We had lunch there and it was good. There is a playground area for the kids and an area where there are live starfish and conch to pick up and hold. This stop was for relaxing and regrouping and just taking it easy! I would recommend this stop for anyone and if we are ever in Belize, we will go again.
We just got back off a cruise to Belize and took the Starfish Island and Barrier Reef Snorkle. It was a great tour and will definitely do it again. Starfish Island itself is beautiful secluded and very quiet. Both the food and drinks were good, and the staff on both the island and the boat for snorkling were terrific, very accomodating, and friendly. Loved it all and will recommend to all my friends
