Pretty and interesting on the outside, inside this is a light and airy space and fairly simple by typical Catholic Cathedral standards. It is worth a peep inside but there is nothing especially interesting or beautiful about it. To be fair, perhaps we had seen rather a lot of religious buildings by the time we got here, so we were not very impressed, but the thing that is really appealing is that it is clearly well used by the devout and is full of locals going about their daily spiritual lives.
Located across the street from the UniPark Hotel. The cathedral is beautiful and sacred. Mass schedules are plentiful. A beautiful church where you can feel close to our savior.
What struck me the most was the size and the number of arches that framed the inside of the church. The stark whiteness of the columns, walls and ceiling creates a perfect canvas for the amazing stained glass windows. The outside spires are in gothic style and do remind you a little of the cathedral in Barcelona. The altar is a massive expanse of marble, including surround steps that lead to the altarThe fact that it sits adjacent to the Park of the Iguanas is very interesting, where you have an entrance to the church through the side door. It is amazing that the church is open and free to all visitors and worshippers all day, any day... not what we would find in North American churches. Apparently, this is not the original location of the church, as it was first built in the 16th century, then relocated after several fires. Officially it is St. Peter's Church and holds the relics of Mons. Juan Maria Riera.
The entrance to the cathedral is a little hard to find because it is on the side of the church, not the front of the church facing the historical iguana par across the street. Facing the front of the cathedral, the door is on the left side of the structure and is well worth the visit. Beautiful construction, very well preserved, with historical markers to help you understand the past.
This church is extremely stunning. It is one of the nicest constructed churches that I have seen in a while. Extremely beautiful. And when the sun is shinning it graces us with a beautiful picture. Something j would suggest to see
It's cool, you can sit for a while and there are some interesting things to see. Although this church is not very old, it is worth visiting in combination with some other attractions around, like the Malecon and the Iguanaparc in front of the church.
This is a beautiful building across from the park. It has nice sculptures in front and beautiful stained glass windows on the inside.
Great free visit, really interesting and right next to the Iguana Park......................[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[[
If you're looking for history or tradition, look elsewhere. This is just a large, fairly modern church.
This is a beautiful building inside and out. Unlike some of the other churches I've visited in Ecuador it is not oer the top and garish. There were christenings about to start when we visited so we couldn't stay too long but definitely worth a look.
This is one of the most amazing churches I have seen. We were lucky enough to actually see the start of a wedding. Absolutely gorgeous! Must see!
Beautiful classic cathedral in center plaza park. We enjoyed walking among the iguanas, then going into the beautiful cathedral to see the stained glass windows and classic interior.
A beautiful monument in the heart of the city. A real compliment to the architecture and uniqueness of the city.
Certainly a grand cathedral. Well worth a visit even for the non-religious. When inside look up for the impressive stained glass. No photo restrictions - except during services of course. Most people seem to view the façade from the "Iguana Park" in front of it but try backing out of the Park directly away from the front of the Cathedral and watch Jesus appear between the towers - try it to know what I mean.
De camino al trabajo con unos colegas extranjeros, nos detuvimos a ver si podiamos ver a ls iguanas. el dia estaba hermoso y con el contraste del cielo azul, la catedral se veia impoenente.
