Passo Giau is a must-see if you're traveling in/around the Dolomites and have a car. It's easy to drive up to and the views along the way are stunning! We stopped in Cortina for lunch first, then drove up to the top of Giau and had hot chocolates at the bar there (best ever!). It was all amazing, and absolutely stunning. It's even better once the leaves start changing to fall colors!
Passo Giau is not to be missed if you are in this area. Higher than all the rest, the snow lingers longer and displays itself in vast landscapes of white. The restaurant at the top (which I forget the name of) is a secret 2 Micheln star chef owner/operator. Lunch there was a taste explosion of the highest quality. Staff were helpful. accomodating and tolerant of two 10 yo boys who wouldn't sit still!! Brilliant in every way!!!
I can hardly imagine a better place in a world to enjoy a damn good cup of espresso coffee at a sunny day :-)
We were driving to Bolzano through Cortina and drove through this route. The view is fantastic, though we didn't see snowfall, but there was snow all around us in March. Breathtaking. Worth driving to.
One of the beautiful places I've ever been. Astonishing landscapes, fresh snow, cold weather. Everything was perfect. If you are in Cortina, this is a must-see place. I'm not sure about the frequency of the bus service, but by car is very easy to get there. Grab a map at the tourist information by Cortina's church and go.
Brilliant Pass. Wonderful views. We had a convertible Beetle and it was perfect for the roads, and to see the mountains up above the car. Brilliant.
Traveled by car through and over Passo Giau.....wow, spectacular views. Not for the faint of heart but we had a very professional driver.
after the a "snake" road to Passo Giau ( with car ) I thought to " MEN in IL GIRO ". I took-off my hat in front of them. The award is a marvelous landscape of Dolomites.
Majesty and Dolomites are a couple of words that settle well in the same sentence! Passo Giau has majesty in spades.Pros: Majesty (even when snowing.... as was the case with us), great drive up (in both directions - it is the steepest of the Dolomite passes) and food and drink available if you so desire. Cons: as is always the case with alpine regions .... it is difficult to pick weather conditions so you have to take what nature dishes up at the moment! There are lots of passes in the Dolomites but Giau is a 'must' on the bucket list!!
We have renewed our 40 year old acquaintance with the dolomites, and of course driven over many passes. We left this to last, and it is one of the best for breathtaking views. Well engineered road.
Surreal. Surrounded by mountains, this beautiful pass is well worth the drive. Breath-taking. Stunning.
I love this pass. The mountain is absolutely beautiful and so different. A lovely area of the Dolomites.
a long way up from the west side, but an easy drive down to Cortina. whichever way you go, the views from the top are fantastic
Passo Giau is a must go if you are visiting the dolomites, scenic view up the route, and rewarding when you reached the top! Actual views are much better than the photographs.Beware of the cyclists and motorcycles if you are driving up the route, there are at least 20 bends up to the top and same amount down.
Remembered what i felt like when cycling the Maratona Dolomiti.Great views and good walking if you like
