My friend and I went here after a hike last weekend, and we were glad we made the effort to stop by! They have a great museum in the basement, and the building itself is stunning!

Take a look at what the Gold Rush money bought back in the day. This is a lovely bit of architecture. Bring your camera. Its totally a place worth a pic.

Pick a Saturday morning that's brisk and not too hot and go to the courthouse just before 10:00 for a great tour of old Auburn. It's free but allow yourself about two hours. You'll see so much history and when the tour is over, there are several good places to stop for lunch. Our favorite is Awful Annies.

Style and interesting history. Old jail use to be next door, but was torn down and built elsewhere. Reall close to Old Auburn, so convenient to visit.

Nothing to dislike! Nice displays and a great film with lots of history. Docent at the desk was also full of information. Very friendly.

Awesome museum about California and the gold rush. Spent an hour there. Farmer's market is across the street.

This is a beautiful courthouse from the 1800's with an interesting collection of California Indian artifacts and a great display of gold nuggets. It is easy to spend an hour here, Also a nice 10 minute film of the historic Lincoln Highway which went through the area. Auburn is a charming town and a nice place to spend a day.

First floor of the still-working courthouse is a free gold rush museum. Interesting exhibits and info, including raw gold samples from the area. Recommended.

I'm particularly fond of this courthouse as a my father was once a superior court judge here. As a child, I called it "Daddy's Courthouse". Aside from that familiarity, I would point out that this building sat for years in limbo while it was decided whether or not to restore or demolish it. Fortunately, it was saved, although the interior was remodeled and the entire structure secured in accordance with earthquake and other standards. The superior courtrooms are in keeping with the spirit of the original structure and the building now has four stories instead of three, plus the dome. An informative museum houses artifacts from local Native American Indian tribes and from the various remnants of the "gold fever" which once brought eager miners, mostly men, to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. James Marshall first discovered gold in Coloma, on Highway 49 (south) about twenty miles from Auburn, and (John) Sutter's Fort is in Sacramento, just thirty-five miles away via Interstate 80 (west). Auburn is one of many "Gold County" towns along Highway 49, which intersects with Interstate 80 within the city limits. Enjoy your trip. I know you will.

Did you know there's a fossil bearing cave in the American River Canyon. Have you ever stood at the edge of a Native American Village in pre-Goldrush times. Have you ever seen a Gold Nugget Collection, or heard the story of Highway 40, The Lincoln Highway. How about peering into an under the stairs Woman's jail cell. If you haven't done those things then you probably haven't been to The Placer County Museum on the ground floor of the Historic Courthouse. Plenty of parking in the free lot, and a metal detector for entry because it's a working courthouse upstairs. It's even the base of the Old Town Walking tour every Saturday at 10am.Worth a stop, just head to the big building on the hill..

On the Ground Floor of the Historic Courthouse is a local museum. Presenting subjects from Native Americans, Fossils, Communication, Gold Rush, to historical Highway 40 it covers a lot of ground in a small space. There's a restored Sheriff's Office down the hall and on old Woman's Jail Cell under the stairs outside. Lots of info in a small space It's free. Upstairs is a working Court House, so be prepared to pass through a metal detector to enter, leave your knives in the car.

This is a really picturesque building near old town Auburn. The bottom floor is museum; gold rush stuff plus Indian artifacts.

Good little museum with Gold Rush and Indian history. WOn't take long, but if in town, worth a visit :)

This historical building is worth a visit. It is beautifully sited on a knoll within walking distance of Downtown. Beautifully preserved. Small museum inside as well.
