After enduring 6 years of struggle the museum has achieved approval of it's Master Plan, and is proceeding onward with restoration of the 125 y/o Teten house. Grounds are ideal for group events, particularly with western themes. A music video was filmed there by Sara Watkins of the group Nickle Creek and can be seen at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_VMfCm_fXk. There are fun week-end "Families Make History" crafts from Noon to 4 PM for kids and their families. A unique niche in the history of Southern California and the San Diego area, with docent lead tours often conducted by the descendants of the founding families.
I always love sharing history in a hands-on environment with kids - one of the most interesting and fun methods of learning, guaranteed to keep their attention! The docents that reside onsite at this lovely collection of historic buildings and history museum have certainly done their homework and offer a wealth of info in a very friendly and helpful manner. Side note - they also help organize a family-fun Lima bean festival and BBQ every year, and that's pretty cool beans!
I live close by, and it's been sad to see this site go downhill in recent years. The one main museum building has some interesting history in it and there's a building with the insides decorated in the style of the time/era which is cool, but the entire outside part of this attraction has really degraded badly. What used to be a cool attraction of an old fire engine and a vintage Texaco gas station facade has fallen into a sad state of disrepair and they seem to be letting the place go. Worse yet, there has been a big RV parked right next to everything, which looks extremely out of place. It's occupied by a senior couple supposedly in the name of security; whatever... I don't know why they bother; it looks pretty bad now. The people who are running this have really let it all go. Definitely NOT a recommended place to stop anymore.
