The explanation at the rock was limited, so without extra insight it is not too much more than a big rock on the side of the road. I suppose back in the day it was significant enough that the understanding it provided was enough to make it a National Landmark. Apparently it helped change the course of scientific thinking. Good for a 10 min stop.

Unless you're a geologist, it's a little difficult to get too excited about a rock. But this one, just north of Rockton, is pretty cool. Worth a few minutes if you're in the area, to stop and learn a bit of the significance of the quartzite folds and the related geology theory. Across the road is a neat quartzite quarry; the wall on the south side of the quarry is really cool. Good to have someone with gelogy expertise along to get the most of this visit. But even without, it's a pretty cool place.

Van Hise Rock is a rock that has a plaque that contains historical information of the area. The rock is nothing special but very near the rock (across the road) are some walking trails that are state property. There is some more historical information in this area as well as some cool rock walls. Overall it is nothing to special, certainly nothing to go out of your way for. If you are going by it is worth stopping for half hour or so.
