I've taken a guide more than once. I would do it again any time before jumping on the bus with the public for the bus tour. With the individual guide you ask what you want and he shows you exactly what you want. I think it is $50. for two hours if I remember correctly and is well worth it,
These thoroughly vetted guidesknow so much more than any tourist, including me and my historian companion. They showed me hidden sights, like bullet pocked houses in town and knew great stories of the aftermath of the battle. Highly recommended!
A tour of the Gettysburg Battlefield has been a lifelong dream, and my wife and I as well as friends of ours traveled there in September 2014. The weather was perfect and the crowds very manageable that time of year. I had contacted the Assoc. of Licensed Battlefield Guides several months prior to our trip and received a phone call from a guide the following day. He gave us instructions to meet him at the battlefield's visitor's center on our specified day. My friend and I arrived at the appointed time, went to the ticket sales counter, and told the salesperson the name of our guide we were supposed to meet. She contacted our guide, who unfortunately had misplaced our information and was unable to meet us. The salesperson then set us up with another guide, a young gentleman named John, who would be able to meet us in an hour. We paid for the tour as well as entrance to the museum and cyclorama, which we then visited while waiting for our guide. He arrived on time and we proceeded back out to the parking lot. The deal is that the guides drive your vehicle during the tour, which allows you to concentrate on the guide's narration and really take everything in. John took us on a truly awesome tour of the battlefield, breaking things down into how the battle started, what happened each day, told us lots of interesting tidbits, and stopped to get out at numerous points of interest. He really brought it to life for us and at the end of the four and a half hours we were really blown away by the experience. We had lots of questions and his knowledge was second to none. We returned to the battlefield the next day and went back over everything on our own. Our experience would have been a lot less fulfilling had we not taken the guided tour. It's so much worth it to have a one-on-one guided tour as opposed to doing it on your own or going on a bus tour. It was worth every penny and I say it's a must if you really want to experience Gettysburg. Needless to say, we tipped John very generously. In short, this is an absolutely "Don't Miss" way to see Gettysburg.
I have visited Gettysburg many times and have a pretty good understanding of how the battle came to happen and what transpired on three July days in 1863. However, for the most complete experience possible, I take advantage of the opportunity to tour the battlefield with a Gettysburg Licensed Battlefield Guide.I have twice scheduled 3 hour tours about a very specific topic of the battle, and even after 14 trips to the battlefield, the guides have managed to show me something I have never before seen. The tours have been carefully crafted with my specific requests taken into account.I highly recommend the LBG. Cost is reasonable, and if you book directly through the Guide office (at least 48 hours in advance), you can save some money. Also, since Guide availability is 1st come, 1st served at the visitors' center, you can be certain to have a tour when you want it, which should be considered if visiting in peak season.
We just completed a 3 hour tour with our guide Fred Wieners. It was an excellent experience for our group of 8. Even those of us that were not so interested in history really enjoyed the tour. We highly recommend you contact Fred.
We took a 90 minute walking tour with a licensed town historian located on York St., Gettysburg Battlefield Preservation Association. He showed us around downtown buildings and landmarks . He pointed out some details that you would never see on your own. His love of Gettysburg history and people shows in his presentation. We will follow his suggestions in the future when we return to the area. Well informed guided tour.
I have reached the point where I pick one small area of the battlefield and go there with a guide just to understand the activities that shaped the battle. I have never been disappointed with the guide's knowledge. Only when the tour is over I am sorry I did not start doing this years before. Larry, Phil, Steve, Joel, Jim, John, Les & Sue are amazing as guides. Many more I have not had the opportunity to walk the grounds yet beside them. I also recommend buying books written by the guides.
My husband and I had Mike as our guide... I was in awe of this man's knowledge and his delivery of the information. We enjoyed the 2 hours immensely and hope others realize that these guides are ready to give you and your family an awesome tour of the battlefield. I am so happy that I decided to go with the battlefield guide.. Thanks Mike!!
We arranged to hire a Licensed Battlefield Guide at the Visitor's Center and for the next three hours we were introduced to the Battle of Gettysburg in great detail. Glad we opted for a 3 hour tour because it was barely enough to scratch the surface of what happened during those terrible three days in July 1863. Our guide, Rich, shared facts and discussed strategies of the battle from both the Confederate and Union perspectives. He truly made history come alive.
Our guide toured the battlefields (in our vehicle). We didn't stop to see all of the historical markers and such (you can go back for that) but he knew a lot of tidbits. When we went back on our own, I heard other guides, they all seem to have unique prospectives.
I opted for a 4-hour tour instead of the standard 2-hour tour. My guide, Jeff Wolf, was excellent. He provided an excellent overview of the battle and the various parts of the battlefield. Because we had 4 hours, he was able to show me a few very interesting things that many visitors do not get to. He was able to answer all of my questions and, despite my having read a great deal about the battle, I learned many new facts.
This was, by far, the best choice my wife and I made at Gettysburg! We hired John Krepps to be our guide for a 3 hour tour. As we approached out time limit, we wanted more. We ended up spending 4 ½ hours with John! He was so good at making the battle come alive - keeping it sequential, detailed, and clear with maps and walking around different spots on the battlefield. He answered every question and really got us thinking about the issues in the battle and the aftermath. We were in a rental car, so John couldn't drive, but he was a terrific back-seat driver! Highly recommend this!!
We took a private guided tour of Gettysburg yesterday with Bob as our personnel guide. By far this is the way to see an learn the history of what actually took place on the battlefield. We would highly recommend this guided tour to anyone. Thanks Bob job well done
This was a very worthwhile experience. We had two young boys and the guide engaged them to make this a fun learning trip for them. He answered our questions and took time to show us places we asked about. Very worthwhile.
The Licensed Battlefield Guides make the trip worthwhile. They answer questions and know so much about the battle it is unbelievable. Our guide was very informative and she threw in some humor to make it fun. The next time we will skip the bus tour and book our own private guide, which would be well worth the cost. We didn't realize this option was available prior to going to Gettysburg.
