Stop by the visitors bureau to pick up a map of the location of the houses. A walk around town will allow you to see most of them. Most of them were pretty cool to look at.

We discovered about architect Earl Young’s fairytale stone cottages online and that motivated us to visit Charlevoix in Northern Michigan. We wanted to see every single house he had built and we sure succeeded, thanks to the Charlevoix Chamber, located at Mason St, Charlevoix. They gave us a map with all the houses built by Earl Young. All for free!It was quite fun to explore the town to discover these dwellings that would be am honor to any hobbits, even though these dwellings were quite larger that the hobbit dwellings in the Lord of the Rings. It was a hot, humid day, but we still enjoyed our walk, even though we walked for about two hours. We have included pictures of what we consider the best of Earl young's dwellings. If you have the opportunity to visit Charlevoix, get a map of Earl Young's dwellings. It will brighten your day!

Fun place to visit, see the architecture and ponder...several different homes, and once in a while, you'll see one on the market!!!

This home by Earl Young is awesome! There are several within a 3 block area of this home, some you can occasionally tour, others you can view only as a drive-by. All have exceptional architectural interest, whether you like stone homes or not. The historical aspect is extremely interesting, so be sure and pick up a guide with the Chamber of Commerce. I believe a few businesses also have maps. Most are near the shoreline of Lake Michigan, and the whole neighborhood is scenic. Located right behind the downtown.

Our builder did a remodel / restoration of this home, so prior to our contract he took us through this house, among others, to see his work. It was interesting for that specific purpose. However, unless one is mad for thatched roofing it would be incomprehensible to consider this an "attraction." But that's just me.

Ok, so you are not a Smirf. Come to West Michigan and go up to Charlevoix for an interesting and fun street tour of privately owned houses. Developer and architect Earl Young was behind the houses and their quaint and unusual design in the lakeshore community of Charlevoix. If you can, stop at the Chamber of Commerce and get a guide or at least a paper map to help with the tour. Afterwards, find an ice cream shop or head on up to Sleep Bear National Lake Shore (National Park System) and grab a great meal in the village of Empire. (Forget about Castle Farms in Charlevoix. Not so good.)Don't forget to put mushrooms on your "burger! The website that I list is Park Avenue Prowl with the Earl Young Houses article selected. That should be enough to get you going. The photos for some of the houses are included.

It was fun trying to find them all and once you did all we could do was stare and shake our heads that someone could have come up with their really cool designs. Would've loved to go inside one of them but didn't know where to go to find out. People live in them & it would've felt really weird just going up & knocking on a door & inviting ourselves in!

People we met in Northpot told us to look for these home. Some were right outside of the Edgewater Inn. We looked but couldn't find others.

Visiting the area for a wedding and during free time we thought we'd take in one of the local points of interest. These home are beautiful and unique. Did I get the feeling of being in the shire, no. Being a big Hobbit fan maybe I was expecting more after reading previous reviews. If you have few minutes is worth a quick drive around to see.

We drove ourselves by the houses. Unfortunately, they were tearing the roof off one of the houses and gutting the inside from what it looked like. Still, they are amazing houses.

Firstly we dined at the Weathervane, one of many in the collection of MUSHROOM houses. This gives one the idea of the interior of these now private homes. The heavy stone and low ceilings take you back to a famous HOBBIT novel! It is amazing to see the neighborhood and how these structures hug the hills and incorporate modern needs into old folk creations. This is a site to behold. Take a photo!

We stopped by the historical society first and got a map of these homes. There were 2 areas in the villiage to see them easily. We walked around one block and drove through the other area. Very interesting from an artistic or architectural view.
