ancient burying ground

Never thought I would like a tour of a cemetery. It is very interesting to see such a place. Not quite sure why I found the head stones interesting but it was. It is also located in a very interesting place right next to the headquarters of UTC.

If you love history and those who made it, then a quick trip to the small and inviting Burying Ground nestled amid the bustle of modern Hartford makes for a nice stroll.As one who loves the ancient tombstones, well .... I was not disappointed - as my photos indicate. Excellent site.

This is certainly a historical cemetery where you can do a self guided tour and learn quite a bit about the founding father's of Hartford, Ct. Many headstones give quite a bit of the description of the inhabitants of this ancient burial ground. Well worth the time to read the stones.

Right in downtown Hartford within walking distance of everything. Surprisingly a calming respite in the middle of the city. Sone tombstones dated back to the 1700's.

Very interesting. On the day I was touring the area there was a history teacher and students giving complimentary tours of the grounds. I learned a great deal and found it quite interesting. Worth the trip especially when combined with Wadsworth Anthem Art Museum and Old State House.

Do a little research prior to going and familiarize yourself with the history. If you can take one of the occasional tours, do that..

This is another hidden gem of Hartford. It's definitely worth spending some time walking around and reading the tombstones - it provides some interesting insights into those who founded our country. It's right across the street from the art museum at the Wadsworth, which I also highly recommend, so I would recommend visiting both!

This is a small burial ground in the heart of Hartford. We spent about an hour here. We read most of the tombstones. You really get a feel for how small Hartford was at one time. Many surnames kept popping up over and over. If you've never been to an ancient burial ground you don't know what your missing. As sad as they are, they are crammed with info. Most tombstones tell the life story of the interred. How they lived, died and ages. Spend a moment here reflecting on those who came before us. And in many cases, how they helped make our country what it is today. Go for yourself and see.

We peaked in here while they are doing reconstruction. In about a month it should be good but at the moment not a lot to see.

Strolling through graveyards is not for everyone, but some of the historic cemeteries in Hartford, Boston, and other New England towns give us an insight to those who founded our cities and built the foundation of our Country. The Burying Ground is fairly small, and is somewhat eery but peacefully tucked in the middle of the asphalt, cement, glass, and metal of a bustling Hartford. You wonder if they would approve of what this town has become! If you're a history buff of this era, or perhaps tracing your genealogy in the area, this is worth a quiet walk-through.

I took my nieces and nephew here when they were young...there's something about how kids connect to history with real, tangible things to peak their interest. From wandering in this burying ground to wondering and smiling at the stone 'sculpture' in the small patch of green outside the side gate, to crossing the street to admire Calder's wonderful sculptures outside the Atheneum. It was a fascinating happy day. Not a recent visit....reminiscing.

The writing and sayings on headstones were illuminating. How they thought at that time in history. The graves aged from the early 1600's to 1800's. Buried right in middle of downtown!

Some graves over 400 years old - many with heartbreaking, poetic epitaphs. Check to see when tours occur. Visited during Envisionfest 2013 and the knowledge of the guide was helpful. The Hookers and many other Hartford historical giants here.

We love stopping and strolling through old grave yards. This one has a grave from 1648. Think about our country then. The markers are interesting to read although sometimes eroded and difficult the old English.

This one goes way back! I visit a lot of cemeteries, but this one goes back farther in history than any other I've been to. Many of the stones were unreadable, but many of them were, and they told great stories. Very well maintained, but yet not unnaturally so.
