Lots of different things to do here. You can see the BIG fish at the overlook, hike, camp or picnic. We saw elk and deer while driving up the canyon. A very enjoyable afternoon.
From a beautiful winding, canyon drive, seeing and feeding huge trout, to the hike to where the Popo Agie river pours into the side of the canyon, the Sinks Canyon State Park offers nature at it's finest. Enjoy hiking, wildlife, and photo ops within a short distance.
Love this place. I was surprised at how absolutely gorgeous this location is. It was a good 20 degrees colder than Lander, and very windy...but can't emphasize enough that the weather didn't detract from the beauty of it. Must go when near Lander!
Stunning place in the mountains. Great campgrounds, fantastic Visitor Center with educational displays (open in the summer), a really unique geologic/hydrologic feature and lots of wildlife.
It's just beautiful. Close to town. Not to be missed. The PoPo Agie goes under the road in the sinks and comes out at the rise on the other side. There are huge trout at the rise. Then go farther up the canyon road and hike to the falls! A natural water slide. Freezing water!
This is an interesting place with a short path to the sights to see. It is not really signed very well from the road but once you walk down to the river there are signs. Visitor center was closed so we missed some of the information about the area. Convenient from the town of Lander and a real pretty drive past the Sinks Canyon site takes you to a pretty view from the switchbacks.
Fun to see the water of the Popo Agie river falling into the cave then reappearing later downstream. THe trout are HUGE - don't feed them bread but instead be sure to purchase the trout food for 25 cents instead. They're big enough but so fun to see them jump and chase the food. When we went (a week after Labor Day) the visitors' center was closed, but the signage along the path and outdoor rock exhibits were very explanatory.
Grew up visiting the Sinks as a child. Moved away, but brought my own children to visit in the summer, Now I take my grandchildren to the sinks. It never gets old!
A visit to the Sinks to watch and feed the trout is a great, short outing for any age from toddlers to the elderly.
I biked from downtown Lander to Bruce's Campground, which is not all the way up the mountain, but far enough for me. Very scenic, great visitor's center, and don't miss the fish at "The Rise." With a car, I would have gone up into the National Forest beyond the State Park.
There was still snow in early May. The sinks and rise were interesting, but popo agie falls just up the road is a short walk in and well worth the snowy weather.
Sinks Canyon State Park near Lander WY was a peaceful, relaxing, and educational family get-to-gether. The campground has private camping spaces with many along the Popo Agie River. Firewood is available for a donation. The campground includes 3 accessibleyurts. The night skies provided great star watching. There is a nice Nature Trail from the campground to the Visitor Center and includes a swing bridge over the River. he Visitor Center had lots of rocks, skulls, displays showing the various wildlife in habitat, and description of geology structures to include Popo Agie River's disappearance and rise a quarter of a mile away.
Beautiful region and Lander is a charming town with several very good restaurants. Central Wyoming's Wind River Mountain range is an exceptionally beautiful part of the world. GREAT outdoor activities of all kinds.
The park is really a series of waterfalls and observation points along the road. The soft rock of the area is an easy medium for the water fin the canyon. This is a great place to take people who may not have the time or energy to venture into the Wind River range.
The canyon boasts a lush pine and aspen forest on the southern slope and majestic granite cliffs on the northern slope. A one-mile nature hike (perfect for young kids) with interpretive signs along the way leads out of the Popo Agie Campground. In addition, you can see the fascinating "sinks" where the water of the river runs into caverns and the "rise" a quarter mile away where the water returns to the surface in a pool full of giant trout. Further up the canyon is a great hike to the falls. This place never gets old!
