city of rocks state park

Only about 4 miles off the highway and hidden from view until you drive into it, this hidden gem is well worth your time. We took off on the 3.5 mile hike around the "rocks" and took a lot of cool photographs of the rock formations. Bring your lunch as there are picnic tables and shade available. There is also water pumped up by windmills from a LONG ways down below the surface of the desert. 5 bucks day use fee per car isn't bad considering the beautiful area you get to see. On our hike we saw jackrabbits, an eagle or two, several wildflowers beginning to bloom and lots of cactus. Stop by and walk through the desert botanical garden to learn the names of the desert plants you'll find in the area. This is a great place.... don't drive by at warp speed and miss out on a beautiful little slice of nature at her best...

This would be a great place to picnic or even camp among the rocks. We just drove around and stopped in the little museum. Kids would love it here. Neat place!

Good hiking through huge boulders. Not too large of an area but worth the trip. We didn't visit another park in the area called rockhound sp but it might also be worthwhile

We stopped by Taco Bell for some food to take on a picnic and soon found City of Rocks where there were nice picnic tables and amazing rock formations to walk around. They all formed from a volcano eruption millions of years ago. It has a little museum to visit, too. Stop by for interesting geology!

This is not to say that you won't. I still get "a kick out of it". It's just fun to run around the rocks. You will only understand this when you see it. Now I have never done this, but I want to, on certain nights they do guided star gazing. With the way the sky is there, I know it would be beautiful. You should look into it.

The campground is located right within the rock formations and would be a great place to camp. We just did a day trip out of Deming but hiked all around the rocks. We climbed up on the top of several rocks and had quite a view from the top.

Because we were not able to ride our motorcycles dispite being surrounded by desert we chose to go elsewhere.

Did a day trip to the City of Rocks while staying in Deming, NM. The State Park has many unserviced sites to camp/park at along with a few sites with electric. Lots of formations to explore and they have picnic tables that you can bring a lunch/snack and sit and enjoy the gorgeous view. Rate is 5.00 for day use and the price for camping varies. Well worth the 30 minute drive from Deming.

Besides the awesome labyrinth of wind sculpted rocks to explore, this park offers tons to do and see. There's something for the whole family. Begin with the visitor's center to see specimens of local wildlife. Then tour the cavernous rocks. Here was the site of an ancient Mimbres dwelling. Signs of their existence is evident in the flat rocks, in the form of grinding stones. Mountain bikes are permitted here, even amongst the boulders. There is a three mile hike around the park, a botanical garden, and a bird sanctuary for bird watching. City of Rocks offers secluded and spacious campsites. If you are a star gazer, be sure to bring your telescope. Here you will find some of the darkest skies in the country. Be sure you are well stocked in food and drink, there is no place to buy anything here. This visit was a day trip for me, but I intend to go back and camp so I can do more hiking and see more of the park. The fee for day use is a modest five dollars per car.

We visited from Deming which is around 30 miles away. The park has a visitor centre, toilets and places to camp in amongst the rocks. I wish we could have camped and looked up at the stars. There is a gravel road to drive around the rocks and lots of tracks cross crossing it for walkers. It cost $5 to visit the park per vehicle.

Great rock formations out in the middle of nowhere. Visitor center has bathrooms, showers for campers, info about the park and a 7 minute video. There is a gravel loop road that goes around the rocks, so you can drive it and see the campsites and rocks. Climbing up the pathways into the rocks is the fun part! If I can do it, it isn't too strenuous. Made it feel like an adventure. There were several pit toilets on the far side of the rock formations, easy access. In addition to tent camping sites, there is a small RV park with water and electric hook-ups. Some sites can be reserved. Fun afternoon, despite the chilly wind.

We want to keep this place to ourselves, so just stay away and let us keep it a secret. It is an amazing geological formation and an amazing place to visit or, as we did, camp and stay for a few days. During our stay in December we had wonderful weather and almost had the place to ourselves. The only negative is that there is no dump station, which is an issue if you are traveling in an RV as we were. Do visit, but go away soon so that we will have the place to ourselves.

We recently spent an afternoon climbing and hiking around the park and really enjoyed it. it looks like it would be a great place to camp and there were only a few RV's there when we visited. Sites have picnic tables, grills, and nice flat tent sites.

To be honest this could merely be childhood nastolgia, which actually brings me to my next point. Kids love this place! I remember when my little cousins visited, they were unimpressed with everything including Carlsbad and White Sand, but this place they loved. It's definitely worth checking out. Also, the sky there is very clear, and on certain nights the rangers will host a guided stargazing night. I have honestly never done it, but it seems like a good place for it.
