the old pogue distillery

After a weekend on the Bourbon tour, we chose this as our last stop on the way home to Columbus Ohio. It is worth the trip here if you can make it. They only make 2 products but have a cool family history. It was also the only tour we've gotten so far that is so small the distiller gives the tour and tasting, pausing at times to adjust a machine while you are there. This small feel was cool, and a stark difference from many other distilleries. We also had a brief look into the old family home as well. This is right on the river and has a gorgeous view. Maysville itself is a pretty small town, and there was not much open but we wandered around the riverfront and there is a cute cafe right there around the river if its open (park place cafe) but it wasn't open on this Sunday. Their products were a little expensive for us ($80 bourbon and $45 for the rye) but the Rye was so amazing... I really might splurge if I see it at a store.

Thank you John for your attention to detail, Old Pogue was deliciously interesting. I enjoyed our personal tour of the facility, not to mention the historic family home and the breathtaking scenery. You can't get a more informative tour than one led by the Master Distiller himself. Add to that an absolutely delicious well aged bourbon and a fantastic rye whiskey, this is a can't miss on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail.

We spent an extremely enjoyable day crossing the Ohio River into Augusta, KY on a ferry and having lunch and doing a wine tasting/tour. We then traveled to Maysville to visit this distillery and from there for dinner in Newport, KY.The experience at Pogue started with a presentation on how the Bourbon is made and the history of Old Pogue and the Bourbon business in general. Then we toured the original family home which is across the way from the brick house. From there we returned to the brick house to taste a couple of spirits. It was a very interesting and enjoyable experience.
