Burritt has beautiful scenery, views, and allows you to step back in time. I loved watching sheep shearing, seeing small animals, learning about how they cooked in the past. Fun and education place that allows all ages to have a great time! Wonderful venue for events, weddings, etc.
We have been to Huntsville many times, but this was the first time we stopped at Burritt on the Mountain. We arrived at 2:45 PM and expected to have plenty of time to explore the grounds. We were wrong. They closed at 4:00 PM - which was not enough time to see everything. We did our best to see as much as possible, but we will definitely return when we can spend more time touring the grounds. We expected to see the Burritt Mansion and learn about the history of the building and Dr. Burritt. What we did not expect were nature trails, an assortment of historic Alabama buildings, modern facilities, and a random variety of farm animals. However, the odd mixture somehow works and makes it really interesting to explore the grounds. The buildings are certainly intriguing, but it's the people that make the experience memorable. These dedicated individuals are extremely knowledgeable about the history within their respective areas. Everyone was very friendly and engaging. They are patient educators and readily answered questions from our group.Since we were told that we would not have enough time to see everything, we started with the cabins and worked our way around to the mansion. Unfortunately, we ended up with just a few minutes to spend in the mansion. The furniture and decorations are amazing. There are quite a few knickknacks and fascinating collectibles staged throughout the mansion. We will definitely return to complete our tour. You do not need to be history enthusiast to enjoy your time at Burritt on the Mountain. The property offers spectacular views of the valley and nature trails. They also host a wide variety of events to educate and entertain (quilting, crocheting, cooking, crafting tools, etc.). They have all the details on their website.
We went during their annual family on the farm event. Got to see quilting, butter making, sheep shearing and just admire the beautiful grounds. Very close to Monte Sano State Park
I hadn't been up to this place in years, and it was like looking at it for the first time again. I loved having children with us that got to see and feel what life so long ago looked like. Great place to educate not just children, but adults as well.
The views from this place are incredible. The home and grounds are pretty. We arrived at 3:15 thinking we had plenty of time because the website it closed at 5. The lady behind the counter said it closed at 4 and that we didn't have time to see it all, so she didn't even offer to sell us tickets. We ended up just walking around for a few minutes. A little disappointing....
The museum itself is average, but has improved tremendously over the last ten years. The outdoor collection of historic buildings is the true reason for visiting this park. My grandchild had the best time touring the old farm village, and was enchanted by the guides in costume. I believe that we have created a young history buff! Thank you! Also, she enjoyed bringing a picnic lunch and dining on the premises. All in all, I think she found this to be one of her favorite places to visit in Huntsville.
Burritt on the Mountain truly is located at the highest point in the city. The views are spectacular, especially in the fall when the trees are so colorful. The staff was friendly and we enjoyed our tour of the "mansion". It was built by someone who was a bit eccentric which is evident in the design and fixtures. We were not able to tour all of the grounds due to time constraints, but I would recommend it for the view alone.
Burritt on the Mountain is situated on Monte Sano mountain, and the views of Huntsville (down in the valley) are terrific. Dr. Burritt's mansion now serves as a museum, and you can tour 19th century homes that have been relocated and rebuilt on the grounds. It's very child friendly, and it's a great place to spend an hour or two wandering around.
Thanks for your review! We look forward to you coming back and seeing more of our great museum and Historic Park. Bring any kiddos in your life and let them play Treasure Hunt at Gold Mountain or simply join us tonight for a HUGELY anticipated concert under the stars at our City Lights and Stars concert featuring KUSH. They are a reggae band and I, for one, can't wait to dance :-)
Burritt on the Mountain offers a spectacular view of Huntsville. There's a home you can tour, trails you can hike, and an historic village you can walk through which made me appreciate the many modern conveniences I take for granted. There is an admission charge which is discounted if you went to the Visitors Center and got the coupons. Only problem with the visit was finding the turnoff from 431. It sneaks up on you because you are looking for any sign of Burritt when you first need to take Monte Sano Blvd to Burritt Dr.
The Burritt mansion is an interesting walk-thru but the real treat is out back. There are two villages: one of 1850 Alabama and the other of 1900 Alabama. We like to see the crafts and talk to the crafts people. Burritt has frequent programs so there is lots of enjoyment for kids and adults.
Located atop Mtn. Overlooking the Huntsville valley. Great farm animal petting zoo and cabins depicting early life here in the valley. Interesting former home of Dr. Burritt now the Burritt museum. Features many of his original furnishings and other area artifacts.Fantastic views, banquet facilities, gazebo stunning location for any outdoor event.
Overlooking the city of Huntsville, AL, is a wonderful, peaceful venue for any event. The outdoor wedding I attended was handled by the Burritt coordinator and she did a wonderful job. The reception hall located close by was large and you did not feel crowded. Most any type of decorating was allowed including lighting and candles, etc. There were ample tables and chairs and a kitchen to die for. The brides room was large and the decor was pleasing to the eye. Overall, this is one of the nicest wedding venues I have ever had the pleasure to attend.
Just attended an outside wedding with the reception in the very new hall. It was the perfect setting for a wedding. Traveled with an elderly person and they had a wheelchair we could use. It was easy to motivate around the grounds.
Taking my grandkids to the top of a mountain seemed too simple, but an hour or two out-of-doors is a good thing. When we arrived at Burritt on the Mountain, the sun was shining, the kids were anxious to romp, and I wasn't sure we'd last an hour. But what a treasure! The settlement was so well laid out that the kids roamed and poked their heads into every corner. A Gold Treasure Hunt program had just started a few weeks before, commemorating the Alabama Gold Rush, and the little ones read the clues and searched for golden treasure with great enthusiasm. Of course, the animals, music, docents in period costume, and the setting were all treasures as well. FOUR HOURS later, we left very happy.
