If you look in any book about American painters you will see the Addison Gallery mentioned. They aren't able to display as much of their collection at any time as, say, the Clark, but what they have is impressive. They are about five minutes south of I-495 and it is well worth taking the time to visit.

Really enjoyed the display of large ship models encased in glass. Schooners, clipper ships, Barqs and many others..

This museum specializing in American Art in a beautiful campus setting. There are three floors of art with a permanent collection and six galleries of temporary exhibits. Their permanent collection has great list of famous names: Winslow Homer, Innes, Benjamin West, Samuel Morse, Eakins, Cassatt, Church, etc. When I visited there were temporary exhibits on DAZE, and Pop Art (Lichtenstein, Warhol, Rauschenberg) which were very good and well displayed. IN the basement is a collection of outstanding model ships that should not be missed. There are elevator and handicap access. A nice little store with interesting items for sale. No charge for admission. No food available.

An excellent museum with a beautiful collection. We love to go in the afternoon for an hour or two. The exhibits are well done and make you want to see everything. They have a wolf painting in their permanent collection by Remington that I love!

We recently visited the Addison Gallery for the first time, a visit made specifically to see the special exhibit, An American in London: Whistler and the Thames. We were so pleased we did--what a terrific exhibit! Whistler, a Massachusetts native, moved to London in the mid-19th century and lived near the Thames. The river and its many bridges were the subjects of many of his drawings, etchings, and paintings. A number of them are displayed in four galleries at the Addison. Several maps and photos from the same era are interspersed among them. The maps helped me get oriented to the various locations of Whistler’s works, while the photos allowed comparison with the etchings and made the etchings’ amazing detail even more striking. The background information and descriptions provided throughout the galleries helped us better appreciate Whistler’s creations. We especially enjoyed the exhibit because we recognized points along the Thames from London trips and realized that we had seen some of the paintings that were on loan to the Addison in other museums. When we finished looking at the Whistler exhibit, we had time for only a quick look in one of the permanent collection galleries and the library/learning center, a part of the Addison’s recent addition. I also checked out the small museum shop; it had some interesting, but mostly expensive, items. The museum has no admission fee although donations are accepted. There is ample parking. Andover is on the Haverhill line of the MBTA’s commuter rail so a visit from Boston is possible without a car (but with a mile or so walk). We will return to explore more of the Addison Gallery. The Whistler exhibit continues through April 13, 2014, and I strongly recommend visiting soon in order to see it.

After reading about an exhibition of "Industrial Stength" artist works in the Boston Globe, we decided to visit the gallery on a Saturday late morning. Walking in the door, we were warmly greeted (it was 20 degrees F outside) and had our coats hung up, descriptions of the gallery's current exhibitions (3), and a nice brochure about each exhibition, the gallery, and upcoming events. As others have mentioned, this is a free gallery, but that doesn't prevent you from doing some freewill contributions to help. The "Whistler and the Thames" exhibition was delightful and well planned, with good written descriptions on the walls in each of the four rooms of pictures. "Industrial Strength" had a nice mix of photographs, painting, and sketches. "Artful Poses" on portraits wasn't as interesting to me, but there were plenty of works in non-exhibition rooms to compensate. The small, but nicely done and documented model boats collection in the basement was my icing on the cake- I'm a model builder- but not in that class! The Andover Inn is close by, so if a day trip to Andover is tough, you can still come and enjoy.

Great permanent collection and special exhibits. Terrific library, and don't forget to go into the library space to check out the view and the Chihuly's on the green roof.

This museum is a great free place to go. Not too big, so you don't feel overwhelmed by what you have to see. They switch exhibits on a regular basis, always have artists to come and present their own paintings or photographs. A must see. And it is free.

Addison Gallery is a gem of a small art museum devoted to American Art. It's permanent collection. Is noteworthy and the special exhibits fascinating - Boston quality without Boston prices or parking. l

The Addison is my backyard museum. It has a wonderful variety of my favorite American art. Its size it just right. You can spend 1-2 hours and come away feeling like you got to see the current selection. We are very fortunate to have this available to our local community.

If you are in the Andover area it is a must followed by a meal at the historic Andover Inn across the street.

The Addison Gallery is part of Phillips Andover Academy and a true treasure. They have American works only. A deep collection of Winslow Homer, paintings as well as drawings. The special shows are always excellent. Definately a worthwhile visit if in the Boston/Southern N.H. Area.
